CHAPTER TWO<br />

THE SEPARATION AND THE ATONEMENT<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong> Theme: This chapter provides an overview<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire thought system <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>. It is <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong>ly chapter that does so. This chapter also<br />

illustrates <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> recogniz<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

appreciat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Introducti<strong>on</strong>: Refer to <strong>the</strong> Chart to understand <strong>the</strong><br />

key terms <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> overall thought<br />

system.<br />

Above <strong>the</strong> solid horiz<strong>on</strong>tal l<strong>in</strong>e is Heaven-<br />

Knowledge, God, Christ, Self, Oneness: <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

Reality. Everyth<strong>in</strong>g below <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e is illusi<strong>on</strong>. This<br />

clear, uncompromis<strong>in</strong>g dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong> between truth<br />

and illusi<strong>on</strong> is what dist<strong>in</strong>guishes a n<strong>on</strong>-dual<br />

thought system from a dual thought system. The<br />

<strong>Course</strong> is based <strong>on</strong> a radical, uncompromis<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

n<strong>on</strong>-dual thought system. Without excepti<strong>on</strong>:<br />

Truth is absolute and n<strong>on</strong>-dual; Illusi<strong>on</strong> is relative<br />

and dual.<br />

In Heaven, cause and effect are <strong>on</strong>e. God is <strong>the</strong><br />

first and <strong>on</strong>ly Cause, and Christ is <strong>the</strong> Effect. God<br />

is love, and love extends itself; this is creati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

God's creati<strong>on</strong> is Christ, and yet <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>on</strong>e.<br />

There is no separati<strong>on</strong> between God and His<br />

creati<strong>on</strong>, Christ; this is n<strong>on</strong>-duality.<br />

God creates and extends; <strong>the</strong> ego makes and<br />

projects.<br />

The mythology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>s with "<strong>the</strong> t<strong>in</strong>y<br />

mad idea." The t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea is <strong>the</strong> idea that<br />

Christ, <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God, separated from His Fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Separati<strong>on</strong> from <strong>the</strong> love and <strong>on</strong>eness <strong>of</strong> God leads<br />

to a sense <strong>of</strong> lack and <strong>in</strong>completeness <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>,<br />

who <strong>the</strong>n turns to <strong>the</strong> ego <strong>in</strong> search <strong>of</strong> love,<br />

abundance and wholeness.<br />

With exuberance, <strong>the</strong> ego presents its case for<br />

separati<strong>on</strong> from God to <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>; <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>s calm and silent. The ego advises <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong><br />

that he can ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> his separate, <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

existence and glorify his specialness <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

<strong>of</strong> God. Still, <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit rema<strong>in</strong>s serene and<br />

quiet. The S<strong>on</strong> weighs <strong>the</strong> evidence and decides <strong>in</strong><br />

favor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego for <strong>in</strong>dividuality, specialness and<br />

separati<strong>on</strong> from God.<br />

4<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g made his decisi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>in</strong>dependence,<br />

specialness and separati<strong>on</strong> from God, <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong><br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s to feel a sense <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear: S<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

his separati<strong>on</strong> from God, guilt over his selfish<br />

desire for specialness, and fear <strong>of</strong> loss and<br />

retributi<strong>on</strong> from God for choos<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st Him.<br />

To relieve <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> ego makes a<br />

world <strong>of</strong> bodies <strong>on</strong>to which it projects <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong><br />

s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear so <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> can ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> his<br />

specialness and be free <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

By mak<strong>in</strong>g a world and project<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt<br />

and fear <strong>on</strong>to it, <strong>the</strong> true source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>'s pa<strong>in</strong><br />

(his decisi<strong>on</strong> to be separate) is forgotten and<br />

hidden <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> veil <strong>of</strong> Selfforgetfulness<br />

and denial.<br />

The miracle, forgiveness and <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement<br />

remove <strong>the</strong> veil <strong>of</strong> Self-forgetfulness, undo <strong>the</strong><br />

separati<strong>on</strong> and rem<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> his true Identity<br />

as <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God; not <strong>the</strong> s<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />

Beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> veil <strong>of</strong> Self-forgetfulness, problems<br />

appear to be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and world; <strong>the</strong>refore,<br />

soluti<strong>on</strong>s appear to be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and world.<br />

"Magic" is <strong>the</strong> term <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> uses for soluti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

sought <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and world. Problems are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>d, and soluti<strong>on</strong>s are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. The miracle<br />

facilitates a shift from focus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and<br />

world to focus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d at <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

decisi<strong>on</strong> maker where <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> can choose aga<strong>in</strong><br />

(for <strong>the</strong> ego or <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit).<br />

•<br />

God's S<strong>on</strong> is <strong>on</strong>e. The <strong>Course</strong> frequently uses <strong>the</strong><br />

term "S<strong>on</strong>s" <strong>of</strong> God, however <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>on</strong>e S<strong>on</strong>. All<br />

life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe is God's One S<strong>on</strong> — not <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

human be<strong>in</strong>gs; all be<strong>in</strong>gs, every gra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> sand, <strong>the</strong><br />

earth, our solar system and every galaxy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

universe are all <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> term "God's S<strong>on</strong>,"<br />

or <strong>the</strong> "S<strong>on</strong>ship." This is not pan<strong>the</strong>ism which we<br />

will address <strong>in</strong> later chapters.<br />

•<br />

Creati<strong>on</strong> is God's extensi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> love. Creati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

extensi<strong>on</strong> are <strong>of</strong> God. Only God creates.<br />

Projecti<strong>on</strong> is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego. The ego makes, projects<br />

or miscreates. O<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first few chapters<br />

<strong>the</strong>se terms (create vs. project) are used<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistently <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>.
