Ma<strong>in</strong> Theme: Reas<strong>on</strong> and madness are c<strong>on</strong>trasted.<br />
Reas<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong> term used for <strong>the</strong> right m<strong>in</strong>ded th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. Madness or percepti<strong>on</strong> are <strong>the</strong><br />
terms used for <strong>the</strong> wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>ded th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
The power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d to put its faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego or<br />
<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit is addressed aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> this chapter.<br />
Introducti<strong>on</strong>: This chapter addresses <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> body and world from <strong>the</strong> ego's perspective<br />
c<strong>on</strong>trasted with <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's purpose.<br />
•<br />
The ego's fear is that we (<strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God) will<br />
exercise <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d to look with<strong>in</strong> and<br />
choose aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> ego and for <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. The<br />
ego's strategy is to keep us m<strong>in</strong>dless. It first<br />
c<strong>on</strong>v<strong>in</strong>ces us that <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God is real and<br />
if we rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d God will destroy us. The<br />
ego <strong>the</strong>n makes a body and a world <strong>on</strong>to which it<br />
projects its s<strong>in</strong> and guilt, and c<strong>on</strong>v<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> that<br />
<strong>the</strong> body is a safe place to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> his separate<br />
existence and hide from God's wrath.<br />
Our real fear is not <strong>of</strong> crucifixi<strong>on</strong> but <strong>of</strong> redempti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
The real fear is that if we choose to accept <strong>the</strong><br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement for ourselves and <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong> God<br />
through <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, <strong>the</strong> special separate ego-self<br />
will dissolve.<br />
•<br />
The ego's "enemies" are <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, God and <strong>the</strong><br />
power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> to choose to identify with <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit and reject <strong>the</strong> ego. Our core problem is our<br />
hidden belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God, <strong>the</strong> hidden<br />
guilt we feel for our selfish desire to have our own<br />
special separate existence, and our fear <strong>of</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g at<br />
our guilt and selfishness for fear <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g punished.<br />
It is helpful to th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear as <strong>the</strong><br />
feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> selfishness. Selfishness is reflected <strong>in</strong> our<br />
desire to be special, to get what we want, to have our<br />
own way, to be right, to be better than o<strong>the</strong>rs, to have<br />
more than o<strong>the</strong>rs, to take credit for good th<strong>in</strong>gs, and<br />
blame o<strong>the</strong>rs for <strong>the</strong> bad. S<strong>in</strong> and guilt are terms <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Course</strong> uses to symbolize our selfish desire for<br />
specialness, and we experience fear <strong>of</strong> retributi<strong>on</strong> as<br />
a result <strong>of</strong> our selfish desire for specialness.<br />
•<br />
The ego can <strong>on</strong>ly survive if s<strong>in</strong> (separati<strong>on</strong> from<br />
God) is real. The ego's deepest fear is that <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong><br />
will look with<strong>in</strong> and realize <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God<br />
never happened which means <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE<br />
REASON AND PERCEPTION<br />
73<br />
•<br />
Faith, percepti<strong>on</strong> and belief refer to <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> our<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d to choose, and to perceive what we put our<br />
faith and belief <strong>in</strong> as real.<br />
•<br />
We are resp<strong>on</strong>sible for how we <strong>in</strong>terpret what we<br />
see. The "objective" world has no mean<strong>in</strong>g, no value,<br />
and no purpose apart from those we assign to it. We<br />
see <strong>the</strong> world through <strong>the</strong> thought system <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego<br />
— separati<strong>on</strong>, s<strong>in</strong>, guilt, fear and c<strong>on</strong>flict; or with <strong>the</strong><br />
visi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit — wholeness, forgiveness,<br />
<strong>in</strong>nocence, love and peace.<br />
•<br />
A major purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> is to rem<strong>in</strong>d us <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
power <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d to choose, and to help us get back<br />
to our m<strong>in</strong>d so we can choose to identify with <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> ego and <strong>the</strong> body.<br />
•<br />
Our m<strong>in</strong>d's power to choose what we will believe is<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly power <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. Indeed <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d makes<br />
<strong>the</strong> world. The ego's strategy is to have us believe<br />
that some<strong>on</strong>e else (God or o<strong>the</strong>r bodies) have d<strong>on</strong>e to<br />
us what we secretly believe we have d<strong>on</strong>e to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
The world's dream is that o<strong>the</strong>r's are victimiz<strong>in</strong>g me;<br />
<strong>the</strong> secret dream is that I am <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al victimizer.<br />
•<br />
Projecti<strong>on</strong> makes percepti<strong>on</strong>. The ego's purpose <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> world is to make <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sanity <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> appear<br />
real.<br />
•<br />
The belief that we could be a separate creator and<br />
substitute for God is our first mistake. And mak<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
world <strong>of</strong> separate bodies as a substitute for Heaven is<br />
our sec<strong>on</strong>d mistake.<br />
•<br />
To perceive a s<strong>in</strong>less world we must answer <strong>the</strong>se<br />
four questi<strong>on</strong>s for ourselves:<br />
1. Do I desire a world I rule <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e that<br />
rules me?<br />
2. Do I desire a world where I am powerful<br />
<strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> helpless?<br />
3. Do I desire a world <strong>in</strong> which I have no<br />
enemies and cannot s<strong>in</strong>?<br />
4. Do I want to see what I denied because it is<br />
<strong>the</strong> truth?<br />
In <strong>the</strong> world <strong>the</strong> ego made, we feel helpless;<br />
every<strong>on</strong>e is separate from me and is my potential
