<str<strong>on</strong>g>Notes</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> Chapter Twenty Three – The War Aga<strong>in</strong>st Yourself<br />
•<br />
S<strong>in</strong> is <strong>the</strong> belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God. Be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
separate from God we are <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict with Him to<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> our separate existence. We project our<br />
belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> and s<strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world, so <strong>the</strong><br />
world becomes our battleground where our war with<br />
God is played out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict <strong>of</strong> special<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ships with our bro<strong>the</strong>rs. The world is an<br />
outward picture <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>ward belief.<br />
•<br />
By separat<strong>in</strong>g from God we took His life; now we<br />
have life and He is dead. We projected our s<strong>in</strong> and<br />
guilt <strong>on</strong>to our bro<strong>the</strong>rs and took <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>nocence; now<br />
we have <strong>in</strong>nocence and <strong>the</strong>y have s<strong>in</strong> and guilt. The<br />
s<strong>in</strong> and guilt <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God has been buried<br />
and hidden from c<strong>on</strong>sciousness, but is experienced as<br />
selfishness <strong>in</strong> relati<strong>on</strong>ships <strong>in</strong> our daily lives. If you<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d it difficult to relate to <strong>the</strong> ideas <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong> and guilt<br />
over <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God, you will f<strong>in</strong>d it easier<br />
to relate to <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> selfishness; and when<br />
you observe your thoughts and feel<strong>in</strong>gs you will<br />
notice it is <strong>the</strong> fundamental emoti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> your daily<br />
experience, and is <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> belief <strong>in</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> from God and your bro<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
•<br />
The ego’s five “laws” <strong>of</strong> chaos are <strong>the</strong> laws by which<br />
we live our miserable lives.<br />
•<br />
When we observe <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego as<br />
codified <strong>in</strong> its laws <strong>of</strong> chaos, it is obvious that we are<br />
<strong>in</strong>sane. So why do we c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue to impris<strong>on</strong> ourselves<br />
by liv<strong>in</strong>g under such an <strong>in</strong>sane thought system? The<br />
reas<strong>on</strong> is that we have not looked closely enough at<br />
our own <strong>in</strong>sanity, and we have accepted <strong>in</strong>sanity as<br />
our normal state. The <strong>in</strong>sane thought system<br />
represented by <strong>the</strong> ego's laws <strong>of</strong> chaos has become<br />
deeply <strong>in</strong>gra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> our culture, religi<strong>on</strong>s, and<br />
governments. We have accepted illusi<strong>on</strong> as truth;<br />
war as a means to peace; fear as love; <strong>in</strong>sanity as<br />
sanity. To be free <strong>of</strong> our <strong>in</strong>sanity, we must first<br />
become fully c<strong>on</strong>scious <strong>of</strong> it; and that is <strong>the</strong> purpose<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scath<strong>in</strong>g revelati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> horrific and pa<strong>in</strong>ful<br />
passages <strong>of</strong> this chapter. As we become aware <strong>of</strong> our<br />
<strong>in</strong>sanity we are able to make an enlightened choice<br />
for <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
•<br />
The <strong>in</strong>sanity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's thought system rules our<br />
lives because we do not go back <strong>in</strong>to our m<strong>in</strong>ds and<br />
look at it. We have become so completely distracted<br />
and identified with <strong>the</strong> body and world <strong>of</strong> form, that<br />
we ignore <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> our <strong>in</strong>sanity which is <strong>the</strong><br />
c<strong>on</strong>tent <strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d. We are so deluded by <strong>the</strong> effect<br />
81<br />
(<strong>the</strong> body and world) that we have forgotten <strong>the</strong><br />
cause (<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d). The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> is to<br />
lead us back to <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d<br />
so we can make ano<strong>the</strong>r choice. In <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />
we choose for <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>, c<strong>on</strong>flict, fear and hate<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego; or for <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>eness, peace, joy and love <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.<br />
•<br />
Love is all <strong>in</strong>clusive; it excludes no <strong>on</strong>e. If even <strong>on</strong>e<br />
pers<strong>on</strong> is excluded; past, present or future; it is not<br />
love. If your love is special, it is not love but fear and<br />
hate. Be not deceived by a special love that is <strong>in</strong> fact<br />
veiled hate.<br />
•<br />
The special love we <strong>of</strong>fer is hate — boxed, wrapped<br />
and tied with a bow.<br />
•<br />
Love is absolute, unc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al, all <strong>in</strong>clusive, and<br />
excludes no <strong>on</strong>e; o<strong>the</strong>rwise it is fear and hate masked<br />
<strong>in</strong> special love.<br />
•<br />
If you believe and experience yourself as be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />
body, liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a world <strong>of</strong> bodies, <strong>the</strong>n you believe<br />
all five <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> laws <strong>of</strong> chaos and you have impris<strong>on</strong>ed<br />
yourself by choos<strong>in</strong>g to live under <strong>the</strong>ir rule.<br />
•<br />
Life is Spirit. Life is formless and eternal. Life has<br />
no opposite — <strong>the</strong>re is nei<strong>the</strong>r birth nor death <strong>in</strong> life.<br />
•<br />
When we have had enough suffer<strong>in</strong>g and c<strong>on</strong>flict,<br />
and are will<strong>in</strong>g to ask for help, we rise above <strong>the</strong><br />
battleground we made, and c<strong>on</strong>sider ano<strong>the</strong>r way.<br />
•<br />
When we experience problems <strong>in</strong> our lives we are to<br />
ask Jesus or <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit to help us rise above <strong>the</strong><br />
c<strong>on</strong>flict, and see it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit<br />
<strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> darkness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
•<br />
The body by itself has no purpose. The Holy Spirit<br />
teaches us that our shared purpose <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world is to<br />
forgive, and accept <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement for ourselves. Our<br />
purpose <strong>in</strong> Heaven is to create and extend <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong><br />
God. By ris<strong>in</strong>g above <strong>the</strong> ego's battleground <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
world we are able to ask <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit for help <strong>in</strong><br />
fulfill<strong>in</strong>g our shared purpose. The ego believes <strong>in</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> and separate <strong>in</strong>terests. The ego's purpose<br />
for <strong>the</strong> body is to kill or be killed, and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a<br />
separate existence for ourselves. As S<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> God we<br />
all share <strong>the</strong> ego thought system, and <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit's thought system, and we all have <strong>the</strong> power to<br />
choose between <strong>the</strong> two.
