Ma<strong>in</strong> Theme: This chapter and <strong>the</strong> next c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most po<strong>in</strong>ted, hard hitt<strong>in</strong>g secti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Text</strong> that address <strong>the</strong> ego's specialness. This chapter<br />
focuses <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> specialness which is to kill. In<br />
murder, somebody loses and somebody ga<strong>in</strong>s which<br />
is <strong>the</strong> sum and substance <strong>of</strong> specialness and <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
Introducti<strong>on</strong>: We start with what specialness and<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego defend aga<strong>in</strong>st: <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement.<br />
•<br />
The ego's world is temporal. The K<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>of</strong> God is<br />
eternal.<br />
•<br />
Specialness is <strong>the</strong> ego's resp<strong>on</strong>se to <strong>the</strong> functi<strong>on</strong> God<br />
gave us which is to create which means to extend His<br />
love. Specialness is an expressi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />
functi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> miscreati<strong>on</strong>. The orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> our<br />
specialness is <strong>in</strong> our belief that we can be separate<br />
from God, and have a special and separate identity<br />
apart from Him.<br />
•<br />
We made and see our bro<strong>the</strong>rs as bodies so we can<br />
project our s<strong>in</strong> and guilt <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong>m. When we are free<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong> and separati<strong>on</strong> we see our<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r's hol<strong>in</strong>ess, and <strong>the</strong> ego dissolves. Judg<strong>in</strong>g<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Christ <strong>in</strong> our bro<strong>the</strong>r establishes <strong>the</strong> need<br />
<strong>of</strong> our purpose <strong>of</strong> forgiveness and acceptance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement. By identify<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> ego's specialness<br />
we have substituted our true Identity as Christ, which<br />
is <strong>the</strong> attempt to substitute specialness for true love.<br />
•<br />
Look<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> and watch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
ego as reflected <strong>in</strong> our belief <strong>in</strong> specialness is crucial<br />
to be free <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> self imposed limitati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> egoic<br />
identity.<br />
•<br />
Our experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> special relati<strong>on</strong>ships<br />
is a reflecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> our belief <strong>in</strong> who we are. Are you a<br />
separate ego <strong>in</strong> a body, or are you <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong><br />
spirit? Your belief (c<strong>on</strong>scious or unc<strong>on</strong>scious) <strong>in</strong><br />
who you are determ<strong>in</strong>es your experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
world. The world is your projecti<strong>on</strong>. This is <strong>the</strong><br />
importance <strong>of</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong>.<br />
•<br />
Specialness can be equated with selfishness and <strong>the</strong><br />
guilt <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>; <strong>the</strong> selfish desire for specialness<br />
is <strong>the</strong> ruler <strong>of</strong> our lives as separate egos.<br />
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR<br />
THE GOAL OF SPECIALNESS<br />
83<br />
•<br />
If we are like our s<strong>in</strong>ful, guilty bro<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong>n we too<br />
are s<strong>in</strong>ful and guilty.<br />
•<br />
S<strong>in</strong> is separati<strong>on</strong>. Specialness means s<strong>in</strong> is real.<br />
Specialness is <strong>the</strong> s<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego. The ego is <strong>the</strong> miscreator<br />
<strong>of</strong> all its s<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> specialness with whom it<br />
forms special relati<strong>on</strong>ships — special love and<br />
special hate.<br />
•<br />
The visi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Christ sees every<strong>on</strong>e as <strong>the</strong> same. We<br />
all share <strong>the</strong> same <strong>in</strong>sanity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> illusory ego, and<br />
we share <strong>the</strong> same perfect love <strong>in</strong> our Identity with<br />
God. The ego's specialness dissolves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence<br />
<strong>of</strong> God's all <strong>in</strong>clusive love — this is <strong>the</strong> ego's fear.<br />
•<br />
By look<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> and watch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
ego, we realize how much our specialness has<br />
impris<strong>on</strong>ed us, and we are able to choose aga<strong>in</strong> for<br />
<strong>the</strong> freedom and unity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.<br />
•<br />
Anyth<strong>in</strong>g that I see as separate from me that does not<br />
support my special separate existence is seen as a<br />
threat, and I will seek to kill it; ei<strong>the</strong>r physically or<br />
psychologically.<br />
•<br />
The guilt <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> and selfishness is so<br />
overwhelm<strong>in</strong>gly pa<strong>in</strong>ful, we deny it <strong>in</strong> ourselves,<br />
project it out <strong>on</strong>to every<strong>on</strong>e else and blame <strong>the</strong>m for<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>in</strong> and selfishness <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> fac<strong>in</strong>g it with<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Disputes, c<strong>on</strong>flict and wars are fought <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>in</strong><br />
an attempt to kill <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> and guilt we feel with<strong>in</strong> our<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />
•<br />
Fear <strong>of</strong> death is <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> death <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> special<br />
separate ego-self. Our true Self is God's <strong>on</strong>e life and<br />
cannot die.<br />
•<br />
S<strong>in</strong> says separati<strong>on</strong> from God is real. And <strong>the</strong> special<br />
separate ego-body you now identify as yourself is<br />
pro<strong>of</strong> that separati<strong>on</strong> from God is real. To questi<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> special separate ego-body is to face<br />
your own "death." You are completely vulnerable as<br />
a separate ego; and absolutely <strong>in</strong>vulnerable as <strong>the</strong><br />
S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God.<br />
•<br />
Our secret vow is our commitment to rema<strong>in</strong><br />
separate from God and eternally loyal to <strong>the</strong> special<br />
separate ego-self. The war between us is a reflecti<strong>on</strong>
