Ma<strong>in</strong> Theme: The holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship, <strong>the</strong> right<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ded visi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.<br />

Introducti<strong>on</strong>: This chapter addresses <strong>the</strong> importance<br />

<strong>of</strong> purpose: <strong>the</strong> ego's purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and world,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and world.<br />

There is also an <strong>in</strong>creased emphasis <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d to choose.<br />

We will beg<strong>in</strong> by look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> noti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong> as an<br />

adjustment (a change) from <strong>on</strong>eness to separati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The first adjustment is <strong>the</strong> thought <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d; <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d adjustment is <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong><br />

separati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

•<br />

No adjustments or defenses are required <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> who we are as Christ <strong>in</strong><br />

Spirit, but adjustments are required to experience<br />

ourselves as someth<strong>in</strong>g we are not — a separate ego<br />

<strong>in</strong> a body. The adjustments that <strong>the</strong> ego makes are its<br />

defenses aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement. First, that separati<strong>on</strong><br />

from God is a s<strong>in</strong> that is real, evok<strong>in</strong>g guilt, and<br />

ultimately will be punished by an angry God. The<br />

next adjustment is <strong>the</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body, <strong>the</strong> world,<br />

and our special relati<strong>on</strong>ships <strong>on</strong>to which <strong>the</strong> ego<br />

projects its s<strong>in</strong> and guilt to "get rid" <strong>of</strong> its s<strong>in</strong> and to<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>nocence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

•<br />

The "stranger" <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God's m<strong>in</strong>d is <strong>the</strong> ego,<br />

who fears <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> will choose <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit as his guide which will lead to <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />

demise. The darkness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego is dispelled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. The <strong>on</strong>e wild thought is <strong>the</strong><br />

"t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea" that we actually separated from God<br />

and are <strong>on</strong> our own as a separate ego <strong>in</strong> a body; and<br />

it is to this t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea, <strong>the</strong> ego, that we (<strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

God) turn to for guidance, until we realize our<br />

mistake and choose aga<strong>in</strong>. The ego looks up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God as a guilty s<strong>in</strong>ner.<br />

•<br />

The S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God as <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker has given <strong>the</strong><br />

ego all <strong>the</strong> power it has. When <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> withdraws his<br />

belief <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego, <strong>the</strong> ego is left powerless, lifeless<br />

and it dissolves <strong>in</strong>stantly. The ego uses all <strong>the</strong> power<br />

<strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> has given it to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its existence by<br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> identified with <strong>the</strong> body, distracted<br />

by <strong>the</strong> world and special relati<strong>on</strong>ships, and out <strong>of</strong> his<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d where he could exercise his power to choose<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />

CHAPTER TWENTY<br />

THE VISION OF HOLINESS<br />

70<br />

•<br />

The S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> his true Identity with Christ is<br />

<strong>in</strong>vulnerable. When he decides to identify with a<br />

separate ego <strong>in</strong> a body, he makes himself appear<br />

vulnerable and experiences himself as he believes he<br />

is. All power <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world is given by <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>. The<br />

S<strong>on</strong> has <strong>the</strong> power to believe that <strong>the</strong> world is all<br />

powerful, and that he is a powerless victim <strong>of</strong> an all<br />

powerful world. And this is <strong>the</strong> world you made.<br />

•<br />

We believe we are <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al murderer as we<br />

believe we killed God and crucified His S<strong>on</strong>. Our<br />

guilt over that gets projected out and becomes <strong>the</strong><br />

fear <strong>of</strong> punishment. The orig<strong>in</strong>al sadness is <strong>of</strong> our<br />

separati<strong>on</strong> from <strong>the</strong> love and joy <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> our<br />

Identity with Him. The ego adjusts to <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt<br />

and sadness <strong>of</strong> murder by mak<strong>in</strong>g a world and<br />

project<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>on</strong>to o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> our special relati<strong>on</strong>ships.<br />

•<br />

The sickly picture we made <strong>of</strong> our self is referred to<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> as a parody and a travesty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> truth<br />

<strong>of</strong> who we really are. The truth is we have <strong>the</strong> power<br />

<strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d to choose how we perceive ourselves<br />

and <strong>the</strong> world. Ei<strong>the</strong>r we choose to perceive<br />

ourselves as victims <strong>of</strong> a merciless world, or we<br />

choose to perceive <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> who we are as <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> God, <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker and dreamer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

world.<br />

•<br />

Halluc<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> is a psychiatric term that refers to <strong>the</strong><br />

experience <strong>of</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g, hear<strong>in</strong>g or o<strong>the</strong>rwise sens<strong>in</strong>g<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g that is not <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> "objective" world<br />

<strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sentual reality. People who are deemed<br />

schizophrenic or psychotic have halluc<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

experience <strong>the</strong>ir halluc<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s as real. The <strong>Course</strong><br />

expands <strong>the</strong> def<strong>in</strong>iti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term "halluc<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>,"<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g that we all halluc<strong>in</strong>ate because we are literally<br />

experienc<strong>in</strong>g a world that has no <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

existence, no real be<strong>in</strong>g. The entire world, <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

universe is a projecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> a thought <strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Once <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al thought <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> is believed <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d and gets projected out mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> world,<br />

we experience ourselves and <strong>the</strong> world as if <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

an objective reality apart from our m<strong>in</strong>d — our<br />

separate bodies and <strong>the</strong> entire world are our<br />

halluc<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. We are literally see<strong>in</strong>g, hear<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

sens<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g that is not out <strong>the</strong>re, which is <strong>the</strong><br />

essential symptom <strong>of</strong> psychosis and schizophrenia.
