to look past <strong>the</strong>m or "forgive." At <strong>the</strong> same time we are forgiv<strong>in</strong>g ourselves, look<strong>in</strong>g past our<br />

distorted self-c<strong>on</strong>cepts to <strong>the</strong> Self That God created <strong>in</strong> us and as us.<br />

S<strong>in</strong> is def<strong>in</strong>ed as "lack <strong>of</strong> love" (<strong>Text</strong> p. 11). S<strong>in</strong>ce love is all <strong>the</strong>re is, s<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit is a mistake to be corrected, ra<strong>the</strong>r than an evil to be punished. Our sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>adequacy,<br />

weakness and <strong>in</strong>completi<strong>on</strong> comes from <strong>the</strong> str<strong>on</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> "scarcity pr<strong>in</strong>ciple" that<br />

governs <strong>the</strong> whole world <strong>of</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong>s. From that po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view, we seek <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs what we feel is<br />

want<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> ourselves. We "love" ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> order to get someth<strong>in</strong>g ourselves. That, <strong>in</strong> fact, is<br />

what passes for love <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dream world. There can be no greater mistake than that, for love is<br />

<strong>in</strong>capable <strong>of</strong> ask<strong>in</strong>g for anyth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Only m<strong>in</strong>ds can really jo<strong>in</strong>, and whom God has jo<strong>in</strong>ed no man can put asunder (<strong>Text</strong> p. 356). It<br />

is, however, <strong>on</strong>ly at <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> Christ M<strong>in</strong>d that true uni<strong>on</strong> is possible, and has, <strong>in</strong> fact, never<br />

been lost. The "little I" seeks to enhance itself by external approval, external possessi<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

external "love." The Self That God created needs noth<strong>in</strong>g. It is forever complete, safe, loved and<br />

lov<strong>in</strong>g. It seeks to share ra<strong>the</strong>r than to get; to extend ra<strong>the</strong>r than project. It has no needs and<br />

wants to jo<strong>in</strong> with o<strong>the</strong>rs out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir mutual awareness <strong>of</strong> abundance.<br />

The special relati<strong>on</strong>ships <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world are destructive, selfish and childishly egocentric. Yet, if<br />

given to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, <strong>the</strong>se relati<strong>on</strong>ships can become <strong>the</strong> holiest th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>on</strong> earth – <strong>the</strong> miracles<br />

that po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> way to <strong>the</strong> return to Heaven. The world uses its special relati<strong>on</strong>ships as a f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

weap<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> exclusi<strong>on</strong> and a dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> separateness. The Holy Spirit transforms <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to<br />

perfect less<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> forgiveness and <strong>in</strong> awaken<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> dream. Each <strong>on</strong>e is an opportunity to<br />

let percepti<strong>on</strong>s be healed and errors corrected. Each <strong>on</strong>e is ano<strong>the</strong>r chance to forgive <strong>on</strong>eself by<br />

forgiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. And each <strong>on</strong>e becomes still ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vitati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit and to <strong>the</strong><br />

remembrance <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

Percepti<strong>on</strong> is a functi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body, and <strong>the</strong>refore represents a limit <strong>on</strong> awareness. Percepti<strong>on</strong><br />

sees through <strong>the</strong> body's eyes and hears through <strong>the</strong> body's ears. It evokes <strong>the</strong> limited resp<strong>on</strong>ses<br />

which <strong>the</strong> body makes. The body appears to be largely self-motivated and <strong>in</strong>dependent, yet it<br />

actually resp<strong>on</strong>ds <strong>on</strong>ly to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tenti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. If <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d wants to use it for attack <strong>in</strong> any<br />

form, it becomes prey to sickness, age and decay. If <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d accepts <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's purpose<br />

for it <strong>in</strong>stead, it becomes a useful way <strong>of</strong> communicat<strong>in</strong>g with o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>in</strong>vulnerable as l<strong>on</strong>g as it is<br />

needed, and to be gently laid by when its use is over. Of itself it is neutral, as is everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

world <strong>of</strong> percepti<strong>on</strong>. Whe<strong>the</strong>r it is used for <strong>the</strong> goals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego or <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit depends<br />

entirely <strong>on</strong> what <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d wants.<br />

The opposite <strong>of</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> body's eyes is <strong>the</strong> visi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Christ, which reflects strength<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than weakness, unity ra<strong>the</strong>r than separati<strong>on</strong>, and love ra<strong>the</strong>r than fear. The opposite <strong>of</strong><br />

hear<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> body's ears is communicati<strong>on</strong> through <strong>the</strong> Voice for God, <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit,<br />

which abides <strong>in</strong> each <strong>of</strong> us. His Voice seems distant and difficult to hear because <strong>the</strong> ego, which<br />

speaks for <strong>the</strong> little, separated self, seems to be much louder. This is actually reversed. The Holy<br />

Spirit speaks with unmistakable clarity and overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g appeal. No <strong>on</strong>e who does not choose<br />

to identify with <strong>the</strong> body could possibly be deaf to His messages <strong>of</strong> release and hope, nor could<br />

he fail to accept joyously <strong>the</strong> visi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Christ <strong>in</strong> glad exchange for his miserable picture <strong>of</strong><br />

himself.
