itself, <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God, can choose <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.<br />

The power is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> as <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker.<br />

•<br />

It is crucial to understand <strong>the</strong> major <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

At<strong>on</strong>ement and <strong>the</strong> ego's fear <strong>of</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement. It is<br />

important to understand and appreciate how str<strong>on</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> ego's desire to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its separate existence is.<br />

We all will literally fight to <strong>the</strong> death to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> our<br />

special separate existence. Whe<strong>the</strong>r we identify with<br />

a nati<strong>on</strong>al, political, religious or racial group; or with<br />

our <strong>in</strong>dividual identity as a body; we are terrified <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-specific, abstract nature <strong>of</strong> God's love and<br />

will kill to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> our separate existence. The ma<strong>in</strong><br />

reas<strong>on</strong> people are unable to live this <strong>Course</strong> is that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are terrified (c<strong>on</strong>sciously or unc<strong>on</strong>sciously) <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dividual, special existence.<br />

•<br />

In truth, s<strong>in</strong> is a call for love. All behavior is ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

an expressi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> love or a call for love. S<strong>in</strong> is a lack<br />

<strong>of</strong> love. The remedy for a lack <strong>of</strong> love is <strong>the</strong><br />

extensi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> love. To survive, <strong>the</strong> ego needs s<strong>in</strong> to be<br />

real, not merely a lack <strong>of</strong> love. Therefore,<br />

unc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al love evokes terror <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego; as<br />

unc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al love means <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />

specialness.<br />

•<br />

As l<strong>on</strong>g as we are identified with <strong>the</strong> body and forget<br />

we have a m<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>the</strong> ego has our total allegiance.<br />

When we chose <strong>the</strong> ego we chose it totally. The ego's<br />

fear is that we will change our m<strong>in</strong>d. When you first<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> turn<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> ego,<br />

<strong>the</strong> ego strikes back viciously because it perceives<br />

you as a traitor. Anyth<strong>in</strong>g less than full allegiance to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ego is perceived as an attack.<br />

•<br />

The way <strong>the</strong> ego protects itself is by exclud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

decisi<strong>on</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d from <strong>the</strong><br />

At<strong>on</strong>ement. It excludes <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker by<br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> focus <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and world, and away<br />

from <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

•<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's chief weap<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> its war aga<strong>in</strong>st our<br />

choos<strong>in</strong>g God is guilt. The ego uses guilt as a way to<br />

preserve <strong>the</strong> belief <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>. Guilt means we have<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ned, and because <strong>of</strong> our s<strong>in</strong> we deserve to be<br />

punished which evokes fear.<br />

•<br />

S<strong>in</strong> is <strong>the</strong> belief that we separated from God; guilt<br />

arises because <strong>of</strong> our belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God,<br />

and fear is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> punishment we will suffer for<br />

separat<strong>in</strong>g from God.<br />

•<br />

First we make up a wrathful, vengeful God, and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

out <strong>of</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> our made up God we decide to punish<br />

ourselves so God does not have to punish us. We<br />

believe we have s<strong>in</strong>ned aga<strong>in</strong>st God and so we<br />

punish ourselves to mitigate our guilt.<br />

•<br />

In a sense <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>Course</strong> is about mak<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

decisi<strong>on</strong>. The ego is afraid <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciple and does its best to drown out <strong>the</strong> Voice <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. Its strategy is to c<strong>on</strong>v<strong>in</strong>ce us that <strong>the</strong><br />

s<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> is real, have us feel guilty over<br />

separat<strong>in</strong>g from God, and fear God's wrath for<br />

separat<strong>in</strong>g from Him. Then we make a body and<br />

world <strong>on</strong>to which we can project our s<strong>in</strong> and guilt.<br />

By keep<strong>in</strong>g us focused <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, we forget we<br />

have a m<strong>in</strong>d that made <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al choice for <strong>the</strong> ego<br />

and separati<strong>on</strong>, and can choose aga<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit and <strong>on</strong>eness <strong>of</strong> God. This process is referred to<br />

as <strong>the</strong> double shield <strong>of</strong> oblivi<strong>on</strong>. S<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d comprise <strong>the</strong> first shield aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit's Voice. The projecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world and<br />

identificati<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> body form <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d shield.<br />

At some po<strong>in</strong>t we realize <strong>the</strong>re must be ano<strong>the</strong>r way<br />

and we can make ano<strong>the</strong>r choice.<br />

•<br />

The place we are called back to is <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker<br />

or <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God — a place we never left. We all<br />

have <strong>the</strong> same power to learn to choose <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> ego. It takes effort and great<br />

will<strong>in</strong>gness to learn because <strong>of</strong> our identificati<strong>on</strong><br />

with <strong>the</strong> ego, <strong>the</strong> body and world; and <strong>the</strong> ego's fear<br />

<strong>of</strong> dissoluti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

•<br />

The Holy Spirit calls us to forget <strong>the</strong> ego and<br />

remember our <strong>on</strong>eness with God. We are <strong>in</strong> a state <strong>of</strong><br />

oppositi<strong>on</strong> because we believe we are at war with<br />

God for our own <strong>in</strong>dividual existence. Our c<strong>on</strong>flicts<br />

and wars <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world are a reflecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

war with God. We simply reenact <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al war<br />

over and over aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> our lives. There are groups <strong>of</strong><br />

people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. who reenact <strong>the</strong> Civil War each<br />

year as a memorial. In our daily lives we reenact <strong>the</strong><br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al Civil War with God <strong>in</strong> each c<strong>on</strong>flict we<br />

fight.<br />

•<br />

Once we make a world <strong>of</strong> opposites, we can choose<br />

between <strong>the</strong> voice for <strong>the</strong> ego or <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. Free<br />

will <strong>on</strong>ly has mean<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong>. God's Will<br />

<strong>in</strong> Heaven is absolutely free.
