Ma<strong>in</strong> Theme: Guilt and <strong>the</strong> ego's strategy to defend<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st our choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong> God.<br />
Introducti<strong>on</strong>: Guilt is <strong>the</strong> ego's pr<strong>in</strong>cipal weap<strong>on</strong><br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st our choos<strong>in</strong>g God. We beg<strong>in</strong> our review <strong>of</strong><br />
this chapter by revisit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement. The At<strong>on</strong>ement, accept<strong>in</strong>g our Identity<br />
with <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong> God, is what <strong>the</strong> ego's use <strong>of</strong> guilt is<br />
defend<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st.<br />
•<br />
The world <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> we made is an illusi<strong>on</strong>. We<br />
rema<strong>in</strong> as God created us, and where God created us<br />
as part <strong>of</strong> Him <strong>in</strong> Heaven.<br />
•<br />
The Holy Spirit's resp<strong>on</strong>se to <strong>the</strong> "t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea" <strong>of</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> is that it never happened, and had no<br />
effect <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>.<br />
•<br />
The raucous shriek<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego has no effect <strong>on</strong><br />
God and His Will. His Will is that we are eternally<br />
<strong>on</strong>e with Him.<br />
•<br />
The Communicati<strong>on</strong> L<strong>in</strong>k between <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong><br />
S<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit; <strong>the</strong> three are eternally <strong>on</strong>e.<br />
We can choose to listen to <strong>the</strong> ego ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit, but <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit rema<strong>in</strong>s with us<br />
eternally l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g us to God.<br />
•<br />
The love and peace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit and <strong>the</strong><br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement are always with us, but to experience<br />
God's love and peace we must accept <strong>the</strong>m. When<br />
we choose to identify with <strong>the</strong> ego we experience <strong>the</strong><br />
ego's fear and c<strong>on</strong>flict.<br />
•<br />
And now we turn to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chapter:<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego's strategy <strong>of</strong> guilt, and <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>'s<br />
guiltlessness.<br />
•<br />
Peace and guilt are part <strong>of</strong> mutually exclusive<br />
thought systems. Peace is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit; guilt is<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego. When we are afraid <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peace and love<br />
<strong>of</strong> God, we choose guilt <strong>in</strong>stead. The ego dissolves <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> peace and love; <strong>the</strong> ego can <strong>on</strong>ly<br />
exist <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict, fear and guilt. When we believe we<br />
are <strong>the</strong> ego, we are terrified <strong>of</strong> God's peace and love<br />
because it means we are dissolved. The ego's strategy<br />
is to ensure we believe s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear are real.<br />
CHAPTER THIRTEEN<br />
THE GUILTLESS WORLD<br />
46<br />
•<br />
Forgetfulness, sleep and death refer to repressi<strong>on</strong> and<br />
denial. We make s<strong>in</strong> and guilt real, and <strong>the</strong>n we<br />
repress and deny <strong>the</strong>m. The ego believes it is <strong>in</strong> a<br />
war aga<strong>in</strong>st God, battl<strong>in</strong>g for its own separate<br />
existence. So <strong>the</strong> ego makes a body and world <strong>in</strong>to<br />
which it can escape <strong>the</strong> wrath <strong>of</strong> God, and <strong>on</strong>to<br />
which it projects its s<strong>in</strong> and guilt, allow<strong>in</strong>g it to<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>nocence. By ris<strong>in</strong>g above <strong>the</strong><br />
battleground as <strong>the</strong> observer, we are able to see <strong>the</strong><br />
war is an illusi<strong>on</strong>; <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God never<br />
happened; s<strong>in</strong> and guilt are unreal; and our Identity<br />
and unity with God are unchanged.<br />
•<br />
The orig<strong>in</strong>al source <strong>of</strong> guilt is <strong>in</strong> our belief that we<br />
are separate from God. To be free <strong>of</strong> guilt we must<br />
go to <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al source and questi<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong><br />
our separati<strong>on</strong> from God. The At<strong>on</strong>ement is <strong>the</strong><br />
realizati<strong>on</strong> that <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> never happened. Jesus<br />
and <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit are our guides Who help<br />
facilitate <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement. The ego is our guide that<br />
helps us repress and deny our guilt by project<strong>in</strong>g it<br />
<strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world and blam<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
•<br />
To <strong>the</strong> ego, guiltlessness is s<strong>in</strong>ful, and must be<br />
destroyed. The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crucifixi<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong><br />
destructi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>nocence, because <strong>in</strong>nocence means<br />
<strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego. The ego cannot survive without<br />
s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear. To ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its own existence, <strong>the</strong><br />
ego is will<strong>in</strong>g to murder its <strong>in</strong>nocent bro<strong>the</strong>r. A<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r who realizes his <strong>in</strong>nocence through his<br />
Identity with God is a blasphemer to <strong>the</strong> ego,<br />
because <strong>in</strong>nocence is a s<strong>in</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> ego's god <strong>of</strong><br />
s<strong>in</strong> and guilt.<br />
•<br />
Christianity, as we know it, is dependent <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
belief that s<strong>in</strong> and guilt are real. As <strong>the</strong> citizen <strong>of</strong> a<br />
nati<strong>on</strong>, if you do not believe <strong>in</strong> war you are branded<br />
a traitor and are subject to prosecuti<strong>on</strong>. As a member<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's bro<strong>the</strong>rhood if you do not believe <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong><br />
and guilt you are branded a blasphemer and are<br />
subject to crucifixi<strong>on</strong>. Separati<strong>on</strong>, s<strong>in</strong>, guilt, c<strong>on</strong>flict<br />
and fear form <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's thought<br />
system, without <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> ego cannot stand.<br />
•<br />
This <strong>Course</strong> reveals that you are guiltless — that is<br />
why you resist and fear learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>. Without<br />
guilt, your <strong>in</strong>dependent existence dissolves.
