thought system <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>. We are so afraid <strong>of</strong> ego<br />
death that we avoid or attack any idea that threatens<br />
our special separate existence; sometimes directly by<br />
outright denial; sometimes <strong>in</strong>directly by try<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> light <strong>in</strong>to our darkness by ask<strong>in</strong>g God,<br />
Jesus or <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit to be active <strong>in</strong> our pa<strong>in</strong>ful<br />
dream world.<br />
•<br />
Traditi<strong>on</strong>al Christianity has fallen <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> trap <strong>of</strong><br />
try<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> light <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> Bible<br />
<strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> is made real and God resp<strong>on</strong>ds<br />
to it. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>, <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> is someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
we believe happened, and because we believed <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong><br />
it became real for us and we suffer <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sequences<br />
<strong>of</strong> guilt and fear. But <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> is not real<br />
and God knows noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> it — <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />
separati<strong>on</strong>, no s<strong>in</strong>, no ego and no world. If God<br />
believes <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong> He would be <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al s<strong>in</strong>ner!<br />
The notes below refer to <strong>the</strong> secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Text</strong><br />
called "At<strong>on</strong>ement without Sacrifice" which<br />
addresses what traditi<strong>on</strong>al Christianity has d<strong>on</strong>e with<br />
<strong>the</strong> historical Jesus. The Bible's idea <strong>of</strong> crucifixi<strong>on</strong><br />
makes s<strong>in</strong> real which evokes guilt and God's<br />
punishment. The ultimate punishment is death. The<br />
ego's god believes he has been s<strong>in</strong>ned aga<strong>in</strong>st and<br />
seeks retributi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> sacrifice. The ego<br />
believes <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> is real and fears God's<br />
vengeance; so, to appease God <strong>the</strong> ego <strong>of</strong>fers Him a<br />
"sacrificial lamb" — Jesus.<br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement with sacrifice says s<strong>in</strong> is real and you<br />
must at<strong>on</strong>e for it with a life <strong>of</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>g and sacrifice<br />
for your s<strong>in</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st God, and pray that He is as<br />
<strong>in</strong>sane as you are and accepts your <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g!<br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement without sacrifice, as presented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Course</strong>, corrects <strong>the</strong> error by say<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />
never happened and <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g to at<strong>on</strong>e for. In<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> "at<strong>on</strong>e" means to correct or undo; not to<br />
sacrifice, suffer or pay back.<br />
The idea <strong>of</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement with sacrifice plays a major<br />
role (albeit mostly unc<strong>on</strong>scious) <strong>in</strong> our special<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ships. We will address our special love and<br />
hate relati<strong>on</strong>ships <strong>in</strong> detail <strong>in</strong> later chapters.<br />
•<br />
The authority problem is at <strong>the</strong> core <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mistake <strong>in</strong><br />
traditi<strong>on</strong>al Christian thought. The authority problem<br />
is based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> belief that I (<strong>the</strong> ego) am <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict<br />
with God. This c<strong>on</strong>flict is represented by <strong>the</strong> terms<br />
"battleground" and "kill or be killed" <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />
wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>ded secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heaven-Knowledge<br />

Chart. The ego believes "I have usurped God's role<br />
<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> thr<strong>on</strong>e, and He is go<strong>in</strong>g to try to take it back<br />
from me."<br />
•<br />
The authority problem is <strong>the</strong> belief that we (<strong>the</strong> ego)<br />
have separated and taken power from God. The<br />
authority problems we have <strong>in</strong> relati<strong>on</strong>ships with<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world are a shadowy fragment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
orig<strong>in</strong>al authority problem with God. The ego is<br />
<strong>of</strong>ten look<strong>in</strong>g to be abused and victimized by<br />
authorities. This ego dynamic is addressed more <strong>in</strong><br />
later chapters.<br />
•<br />
The source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> authority problem is <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />
belief that it separated from and killed God, evok<strong>in</strong>g<br />
guilt and demand<strong>in</strong>g punishment which engenders<br />
fear. Fear stems from what <strong>the</strong> authorities may do to<br />
me. I believe I have taken God's power and authority,<br />
and I fear God or ano<strong>the</strong>r authority figure will try to<br />
take it back from me. My <strong>in</strong>dependent existence as a<br />
body <strong>in</strong> a world is pro<strong>of</strong> that I have taken God's life,<br />
power and authority.<br />

Knowledge versus percepti<strong>on</strong> is an important <strong>the</strong>me<br />
<strong>in</strong> this chapter and <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>Course</strong>. Refer to <strong>the</strong><br />
Chart: Heaven-Knowledge is a state <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>eness.<br />
Percepti<strong>on</strong> or c<strong>on</strong>sciousness is a state <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
•<br />
Heaven is perfect <strong>on</strong>eness. Once <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />
seemed to happen, <strong>the</strong>re appeared to be a dualistic<br />
universe <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> a <strong>on</strong>e-m<strong>in</strong>ded universe. The<br />
dualistic universe is referred to as "percepti<strong>on</strong>."<br />
Percepti<strong>on</strong> is c<strong>on</strong>sciousness <strong>of</strong> a subject/object<br />
separati<strong>on</strong> — this is duality. Knowledge or Heaven is<br />
n<strong>on</strong>-dual, n<strong>on</strong>-specific and abstract.<br />
•<br />
The term “<strong>in</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>” refers to what <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d makes<br />
to fill its perceived lack. The world <strong>of</strong> duality and<br />
specifics is also <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> judgment. In <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Course</strong>, judgment means c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong>. To give up<br />
judgment means to give up c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Generally, judgment means selectivity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world<br />
<strong>of</strong> duality. In Heaven or Knowledge <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to select am<strong>on</strong>g — <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>on</strong>ly God's wholeness.<br />
Once <strong>the</strong> split m<strong>in</strong>d occurred, judgment was <strong>the</strong> split<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d's foundati<strong>on</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> world we must make<br />
judgments and select from various elements <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
world. Percepti<strong>on</strong> is based <strong>on</strong> choos<strong>in</strong>g for what we<br />
deem important, and aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> unimportant.<br />
C<strong>on</strong>versely, God's creati<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong> abstract,<br />
unc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al love <strong>of</strong> all. Our true Identity as Christ<br />
is God's extensi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> His perfect love.
