Ma<strong>in</strong> Themes: True percepti<strong>on</strong> or visi<strong>on</strong>; and<br />

percepti<strong>on</strong> versus Knowledge. The power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>d is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes through <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

<strong>Course</strong> and is addressed <strong>in</strong> this chapter.<br />

Introducti<strong>on</strong>: Innocent percepti<strong>on</strong> is a syn<strong>on</strong>ym for<br />

true percepti<strong>on</strong> or visi<strong>on</strong>. True percepti<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong><br />

correcti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's mispercepti<strong>on</strong>. Chapter Three<br />

addresses <strong>the</strong> nature and structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> split m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

It is important to know what <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d is to realize<br />

and understand its power.<br />

•<br />

The terms "right m<strong>in</strong>d" and "wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>d" are<br />

illustrated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heaven-Knowledge Chart. The<br />

Holy Spirit is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right m<strong>in</strong>d and represents <strong>the</strong><br />

memory <strong>of</strong> God's <strong>on</strong>eness. The ego is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wr<strong>on</strong>g<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d and represents <strong>the</strong> perceived separati<strong>on</strong> from<br />

God's <strong>on</strong>eness. Heaven-Knowledge is <strong>the</strong> One M<strong>in</strong>d<br />

or <strong>on</strong>e-m<strong>in</strong>dedness. C<strong>on</strong>sciousness refers to<br />

percepti<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> duality. N<strong>on</strong>-duality is<br />

Heaven-Knowledge, Truth. Forgiveness is <strong>the</strong><br />

reflecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>eness <strong>of</strong> Heaven with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

illusory world. In <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship we do not<br />

perceive ano<strong>the</strong>r pers<strong>on</strong>'s <strong>in</strong>terests as separate from<br />

our own — <strong>the</strong>re is no w<strong>in</strong>ner or loser, victim or<br />

victimizer. Forgiveness is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

duality, c<strong>on</strong>sciousness or percepti<strong>on</strong>, but it undoes<br />

<strong>the</strong> ego's asserti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> separate <strong>in</strong>terests; you or me,<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ner or loser, victim or victimizer, <strong>on</strong>e or <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r. When <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> percepti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> a w<strong>in</strong>ner and a<br />

loser, every<strong>on</strong>e loses. In <strong>the</strong> ego's percepti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

separati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> ego was <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ner and God <strong>the</strong> loser.<br />

One-m<strong>in</strong>dedness or <strong>the</strong> One M<strong>in</strong>d is <strong>the</strong> n<strong>on</strong>dualistic<br />

world <strong>of</strong> Heaven's Love. In Heaven, God is<br />

not separate from Christ. There is no Creator and<br />

created — <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>on</strong>ly Love. There is <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> Will<br />

<strong>of</strong> God which is Love. Once we are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> split m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> duality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>d and <strong>the</strong> right<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d — both are illusory. Wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>ded th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

roots us deeper <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>. Right<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ded th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g helps us to awaken from <strong>the</strong> dream<br />

<strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God's love. Forgiveness is <strong>the</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>al illusi<strong>on</strong>; it does not lead us to fur<strong>the</strong>r illusi<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

but ends all illusi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>sciousness was <strong>the</strong> first split <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>d after <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>. C<strong>on</strong>sciousness implies a<br />

subject and an object. I am c<strong>on</strong>scious <strong>of</strong> some th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

CHAPTER THREE<br />

THE INNOCENT PERCEPTION<br />

8<br />

— a pers<strong>on</strong>, a body, a behavior, an idea. In<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sciousness <strong>the</strong>re is a perceiver and <strong>the</strong> object <strong>of</strong><br />

percepti<strong>on</strong>. Subject/object duality is <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sciousness<br />

and is illusory.<br />

Once <strong>the</strong> split m<strong>in</strong>d arises (right m<strong>in</strong>d - wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>d)<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is a third part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d called <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong><br />

maker or <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God who now must choose<br />

between <strong>the</strong> right m<strong>in</strong>d (<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit), and <strong>the</strong><br />

wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>d (<strong>the</strong> ego). These "parts" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d are<br />

not parts, but functi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. The thought<br />

system we choose, ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> ego's wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>d, or<br />

<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's right m<strong>in</strong>d, becomes real to us<br />

because we believe <strong>in</strong> what we have made and<br />

chosen, not because it is real <strong>in</strong> itself. Belief is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d as <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker or S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

God. The S<strong>on</strong> as <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker or <strong>the</strong> dreamer<br />

has all power over <strong>the</strong> dream world.<br />

•<br />

Faith means trust or belief. Faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego is<br />

faithlessness because it is faith <strong>in</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>g. Faith <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit is faithfulness because <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit<br />

is <strong>the</strong> reflecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> real. The power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d as<br />

<strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker is to choose <strong>the</strong> thought system<br />

with which to identify. Once we make <strong>the</strong> choice it<br />

becomes reality for us. The experience <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego rema<strong>in</strong>s with us until we realize <strong>the</strong>re<br />

must be a better way, and we withdraw our faith <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ego and put it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit<br />

represents <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement that says<br />

<strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God never happened.<br />

•<br />

The ego makes or projects. The Holy Spirit reflects<br />

God's creati<strong>on</strong>. In Heaven as Christ, creati<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong><br />

extensi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God's love. In our right m<strong>in</strong>d we extend<br />

<strong>the</strong> forgiveness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. On <strong>the</strong> Chart, <strong>the</strong><br />

black dot represents <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> maker or <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

God which is <strong>the</strong> start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> split m<strong>in</strong>d's<br />

thought system — also it is <strong>the</strong> end<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t at <strong>the</strong><br />

end <strong>of</strong> our journey. The journey began when <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong><br />

chose <strong>the</strong> ego, and ends when he realizes his mistake<br />

and returns to God.<br />

The ego's thought system is <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>, s<strong>in</strong>, guilt,<br />

fear and <strong>the</strong> body. The Holy Spirit's thought system<br />

is <strong>of</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement, forgiveness, <strong>in</strong>nocence, love and<br />

spirit. Both thought systems beg<strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong><br />

maker's choice, and both are c<strong>on</strong>sistent, logical<br />

thought systems. Once believed <strong>the</strong>y each follow
