The ego's purpose is to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its special separate<br />
existence. The ego is illusory. God's Will is that He<br />
is <strong>on</strong>e. God is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly reality. The c<strong>on</strong>flict between<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego and God is <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict between illusi<strong>on</strong> and<br />
reality, which is no c<strong>on</strong>flict at all. The separati<strong>on</strong><br />
never happened, and <strong>the</strong>re is no real authority<br />
problem.<br />
•<br />
In <strong>the</strong> Knowledge <strong>of</strong> Heaven <strong>the</strong>re is no separati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
God and Christ, or <strong>of</strong> Creator and Creati<strong>on</strong>. God is<br />
<strong>on</strong>e with His S<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> truth. Separati<strong>on</strong> is impossible<br />
because God is <strong>on</strong>e, and <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>on</strong>ly God. The S<strong>on</strong>'s<br />
freedom and aut<strong>on</strong>omy is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> realizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> his<br />
<strong>on</strong>eness with his Fa<strong>the</strong>r. There is no o<strong>the</strong>r freedom.<br />
From <strong>the</strong> ego's perspective, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e with God is<br />
b<strong>on</strong>dage, tyranny and slavery. So <strong>the</strong> ego fights with<br />
all its might aga<strong>in</strong>st God, <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al tyrant, to<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its separati<strong>on</strong>. Even <strong>the</strong> ego's l<strong>on</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
God is twisted <strong>in</strong>to a strategy to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its<br />
specialness, aut<strong>on</strong>omy and separati<strong>on</strong> from Him; this<br />
is <strong>the</strong> "spiritual" ego.<br />
•<br />
What separates us from God is merely fear, not<br />
reality. Fear is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's strategy to keep us<br />
from gett<strong>in</strong>g back to <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d to choose<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st it, and for <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. It is important to<br />
be fully aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego <strong>in</strong> order to<br />
let it go.<br />
•<br />
God is not dependent <strong>on</strong> us or <strong>in</strong>complete without us.<br />
This is ano<strong>the</strong>r example <strong>of</strong> how <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> uses<br />
anthropomorphic symbology to facilitate our<br />
understand<strong>in</strong>g. We can relate to and understand <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>completeness a parent feels when separate from its<br />
child — <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r from His S<strong>on</strong>. True freedom and<br />
aut<strong>on</strong>omy is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> realizati<strong>on</strong> that <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r and S<strong>on</strong><br />
are <strong>on</strong>e. The ego's idea <strong>of</strong> freedom and aut<strong>on</strong>omy is<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> belief that <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r and S<strong>on</strong> are separate.<br />
Incompleteness is <strong>on</strong>ly imag<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
separated S<strong>on</strong>.<br />
•<br />
Now we will look at <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's Answer to <strong>the</strong><br />
ego's authority problem.<br />
•<br />
In terms <strong>of</strong> our identity, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite and <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ite are<br />
mutually exclusive. You identify yourself with <strong>on</strong>e<br />
or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. Ei<strong>the</strong>r you are <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite or you are f<strong>in</strong>ite;<br />
eternal or temporal. This is ano<strong>the</strong>r example <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
first pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> miracles which is that <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />
order <strong>of</strong> difficulty am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m. God’s universe is <strong>the</strong><br />
universe <strong>of</strong> Spirit, not <strong>the</strong> physical universe.<br />

To benefit fully from <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> this <strong>Course</strong>, it<br />
is imperative that you take its abstract c<strong>on</strong>cepts and<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and apply <strong>the</strong>m to c<strong>on</strong>crete situati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />
your daily experience — relati<strong>on</strong>ships with family,<br />
friends, enemies and <strong>in</strong>timate o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
•<br />
The closer we get to realiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al error, our<br />
belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God, <strong>the</strong> more fear we may<br />
experience as <strong>the</strong> ego shrieks <strong>in</strong> terror, petrified <strong>of</strong> its<br />
loom<strong>in</strong>g demise.<br />
•<br />
The "bleak little world" is your world. You are <strong>the</strong><br />
hero <strong>of</strong> your bleak little world, and if it vanishes, you<br />
vanish with it — and this is your fear. There is no<br />
love, no peace, and no happ<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world we<br />
made, because we made <strong>the</strong> world out <strong>of</strong> a projecti<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> our s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear. To know true love, true<br />
peace and true happ<strong>in</strong>ess we must leave <strong>the</strong> bleak<br />
little world we made and go back to our Source.<br />
•<br />
The dark compani<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> specialness are s<strong>in</strong>, guilt,<br />
fear and hate. When brought to <strong>the</strong> light, <strong>the</strong> dark<br />
compani<strong>on</strong>s disappear <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>gness from<br />
which <strong>the</strong>y came.<br />
•<br />
To <strong>the</strong> ego, which is <strong>the</strong> child <strong>of</strong> darkness, <strong>the</strong> dark<br />
compani<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt, fear and hate are comforters<br />
because <strong>the</strong> ego cannot exist without <strong>the</strong>m. To <strong>the</strong><br />
S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God, who is <strong>the</strong> child <strong>of</strong> light, <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />
darkness at all. The peace <strong>of</strong> God cannot be found <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> darkness <strong>of</strong> special relati<strong>on</strong>ships, separati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
c<strong>on</strong>flict, rejecti<strong>on</strong> or judgment; but <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>eness, peace, acceptance and forgiveness.<br />
•<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g this <strong>Course</strong> means <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego. Any<br />
resistance to learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> is an attempt by <strong>the</strong><br />
ego to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its existence.<br />
•<br />
The underly<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>Course</strong> is<br />
summed up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> statements, "There is no order <strong>of</strong><br />
difficulty <strong>in</strong> miracles, and <strong>the</strong>re is no hierarchy <strong>of</strong><br />
illusi<strong>on</strong>s. Only reality is true." This is simple, yet<br />
radical. The challenge is <strong>in</strong> apply<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se simple<br />
and radical pr<strong>in</strong>ciples to your own daily experience<br />
so you reap <strong>the</strong> full benefit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>. The<br />
Workbook for Students facilitates <strong>the</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>gs learned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Text</strong>.<br />
•<br />
This is not a <strong>Course</strong> <strong>in</strong> philosophical speculati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
The <strong>Course</strong> is given to facilitate a shift <strong>in</strong> identity<br />
through <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> philosophy and its practical<br />
applicati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> our daily lives. There is <strong>on</strong>e problem
