<str<strong>on</strong>g>Notes</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> Chapter Seventeen – Forgiveness and <strong>the</strong> Holy Relati<strong>on</strong>ship<br />
•<br />
Forgiveness is not between two people. Forgiveness<br />
is <strong>in</strong> your m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>on</strong>ly. Forgiveness facilitates <strong>the</strong><br />
At<strong>on</strong>ement which is <strong>the</strong> realizati<strong>on</strong> that <strong>the</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> from God never happened. Forgiveness is<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mistaken choice you made <strong>in</strong> your m<strong>in</strong>d to<br />
believe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong>, identify with <strong>the</strong> ego, and<br />
reject your true Identity with <strong>the</strong> wholeness <strong>of</strong> Christ.<br />
Forgiveness has absolutely noth<strong>in</strong>g to do with people<br />
or <strong>the</strong>ir acti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. No <strong>on</strong>e can betray me<br />
except my self by deny<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> who I am.<br />
Therefore no <strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world needs to be forgiven.<br />
•<br />
What you did aga<strong>in</strong>st your bro<strong>the</strong>r was to see him as<br />
an ego. You see him as a selfish ego because you<br />
believe you are a selfish ego, and you want to blame<br />
him for your selfishness. Whatever you are guilty<br />
and shameful <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong> your self, you project <strong>on</strong>to o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
What you see <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world as evil, you believe is <strong>the</strong><br />
evil <strong>in</strong> you. The value <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs and <strong>the</strong> world is that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y serve as a mirror for your hidden guilt, shame<br />
and fear. See<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs gives you <strong>the</strong><br />
opportunity to forgive it <strong>in</strong> yourself as you forgive it<br />
<strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. You know when all guilt and shame are<br />
completely removed from your unc<strong>on</strong>scious m<strong>in</strong>d<br />
when you look out and see a bright, clean, beautiful<br />
and <strong>in</strong>nocent world. For your world is yourself.<br />
There is no separati<strong>on</strong>. This is why it takes <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e<br />
pers<strong>on</strong> to save <strong>the</strong> whole world — you.<br />
•<br />
Once we choose <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's goal <strong>of</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement<br />
through forgiveness, every situati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> our lives<br />
becomes a vehicle for help<strong>in</strong>g us accomplish our<br />
purpose <strong>of</strong> realiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> who we are.<br />
•<br />
The Holy Spirit's picture is <strong>the</strong> holy <strong>in</strong>stant<br />
symbolized by Light, framed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship.<br />
When we focus <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> picture it becomes <strong>the</strong> real<br />
world, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> picture and frame disappear, and<br />
what is left is God.<br />
•<br />
Through forgiveness we realize <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>on</strong> goal we<br />
share <strong>in</strong> purpose with our bro<strong>the</strong>rs, which becomes a<br />
reflecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> our <strong>on</strong>eness <strong>in</strong> Christ. The <strong>on</strong>e purpose<br />
<strong>of</strong> our relati<strong>on</strong>ships with o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world is to get<br />
us back to <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly real relati<strong>on</strong>ship — our<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ship with God <strong>in</strong> Spirit — which is <strong>the</strong><br />
purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship. The purpose <strong>of</strong> our<br />
special relati<strong>on</strong>ships is to keep us identified with <strong>the</strong><br />
ego, <strong>the</strong> body and <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

The "two pictures" metaphor is <strong>in</strong>spired by<br />
Shakespeare's Hamlet. Throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>, Jesus<br />
is present<strong>in</strong>g two thought systems, <strong>the</strong> ego's and <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit's, and is ask<strong>in</strong>g us to look closely at <strong>the</strong>m<br />
so we can make an enlightened decisi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
•<br />
The ego's picture <strong>of</strong> death and guilt framed <strong>in</strong> special<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ships, and <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit's picture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy<br />
<strong>in</strong>stant and Light framed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship are<br />
mutually exclusive and cannot be comb<strong>in</strong>ed. The<br />
Light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy <strong>in</strong>stant sh<strong>in</strong>es away <strong>the</strong> darkness <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> ego. It is comm<strong>on</strong> for people, however, to try to<br />
br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> ego's darkness while<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ego's existence. This happens when<br />
we try to make <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship a special,<br />
exclusive relati<strong>on</strong>ship. We will address this dynamic<br />
later <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chapter.<br />
The holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship is referred to as if it is with a<br />
pers<strong>on</strong> or an entity. The holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship is a process<br />
that happens over time as we go back and forth from<br />
<strong>the</strong> special relati<strong>on</strong>ship to <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship, until<br />
our fear abates enough that we can stay <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ship or holy <strong>in</strong>stant. The holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship is<br />
<strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> ego and choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit <strong>in</strong>stead. The holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship is not a<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ship you have with some<strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong> a body <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
world. The holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship happens at <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong><br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>of</strong> your m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g at<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego with <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, and choos<strong>in</strong>g for Christ<br />
<strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
•<br />
As we beg<strong>in</strong> to questi<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> our special<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ships, and see <strong>the</strong> tremendous pa<strong>in</strong> and<br />
suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y are caus<strong>in</strong>g us, we may feel a sense <strong>of</strong><br />
disillusi<strong>on</strong>ment, distress and pend<strong>in</strong>g loss. This<br />
feel<strong>in</strong>g is temporary.<br />
•<br />
When we ask Jesus or <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit for help with<br />
our body or situati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> our world, we are<br />
attempt<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g Their Light <strong>in</strong>to our darkness for<br />
our pers<strong>on</strong>al benefit while ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g our darkness.<br />
Attempt<strong>in</strong>g to use Jesus for our pers<strong>on</strong>al ga<strong>in</strong> is<br />
try<strong>in</strong>g to turn <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship <strong>in</strong>to an unholy,<br />
special relati<strong>on</strong>ship. Jesus and <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit serve<br />
as our guides who lead us out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> illusi<strong>on</strong><br />
to <strong>the</strong> real world <strong>of</strong> spirit. When we ask Jesus or <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit for help with our body and our world, we<br />
are do<strong>in</strong>g exactly what <strong>the</strong> ego wants us to do by<br />
stay<strong>in</strong>g identified with <strong>the</strong> body and distracted by <strong>the</strong><br />
world. This is what most religi<strong>on</strong>s do with <strong>the</strong>ir
