CHAPTER SEVENTEEN<br />
FORGIVENESS AND THE HOLY RELATIONSHIP<br />
Ma<strong>in</strong> Themes: The holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship, forgiveness,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d to establish mean<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
purpose.<br />
Introducti<strong>on</strong>: Before <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, we are all <strong>on</strong>e<br />
<strong>in</strong> God, as God. Until <strong>the</strong> "t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea" <strong>of</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> from God arose <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. The Holy<br />
Spirit's answer to <strong>the</strong> t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea is that <strong>the</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> never happened. The ego's answer is that<br />
<strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God did happen, it is a s<strong>in</strong>, we<br />
are guilty <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, and we better hide to avoid <strong>the</strong><br />
wrath <strong>of</strong> God. The ego <strong>the</strong>n makes a body and world<br />
<strong>on</strong>to which it can project itself, al<strong>on</strong>g with its s<strong>in</strong> and<br />
guilt <strong>in</strong>to its special relati<strong>on</strong>ships <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. The<br />
Holy Spirit resp<strong>on</strong>ds by <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> holy<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ship. The ego tries to turn <strong>the</strong> holy<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ship <strong>in</strong>to a special relati<strong>on</strong>ship by attempt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world. The Holy<br />
Spirit reiterates <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship until we f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />
accept <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship through forgiveness and<br />
<strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement, which leads us <strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> real world<br />
and back to Heaven with God where we were before<br />
<strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
•<br />
The ego's motive is to defend aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement<br />
to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its special separate existence.<br />
•<br />
Our special relati<strong>on</strong>ships were born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />
<strong>in</strong>stant our belief <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al separati<strong>on</strong> from God<br />
was born; <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit was also with us from that<br />
very first <strong>in</strong>stant.<br />
•<br />
By choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ego, our wish for <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />
existence has become true <strong>in</strong> our dream. Our dream<br />
<strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> becomes our experience <strong>of</strong> reality<br />
because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>,<br />
faith refers to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d's power to believe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego<br />
or <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. When we put our faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit, we put our faith <strong>in</strong> "everyth<strong>in</strong>g." When we put<br />
our faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego, we put our faith <strong>in</strong> "noth<strong>in</strong>g,"<br />
and faith <strong>in</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>g is referred to as faithlessness.<br />
•<br />
The ego fears we will choose <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit, which would mean <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego.<br />
•<br />
When we put our faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego by choos<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, we have rendered our true power and<br />
strength useless.<br />

•<br />
Displacement is a psychological term that refers to<br />
displac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> true cause <strong>of</strong> a problem <strong>on</strong>to a<br />
different cause to avoid fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> true cause. It is<br />
similar to projecti<strong>on</strong> and dissociati<strong>on</strong>. Displacement,<br />
projecti<strong>on</strong> and dissociati<strong>on</strong> are what we do with our<br />
s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear, which are all caused by our belief<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al separati<strong>on</strong> from God. Our <strong>on</strong>e<br />
problem is our choice to believe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />
from God and identify with <strong>the</strong> ego. The <strong>on</strong>e soluti<strong>on</strong><br />
is to realize <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> never happened and<br />
identify with <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.<br />
•<br />
When we put faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego, <strong>the</strong> body and <strong>the</strong><br />
world, salvati<strong>on</strong> cannot be found. The miracle shifts<br />
our faith from <strong>the</strong> ego to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. Faith is<br />
restored where it was lost; at <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
part <strong>of</strong> your m<strong>in</strong>d. Special relati<strong>on</strong>ships serve to<br />
displace <strong>the</strong> real cause <strong>of</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
our m<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>on</strong>to o<strong>the</strong>r people and <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
•<br />
Vengeance is what we secretly believe we deserve<br />
from God for s<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st Him by leav<strong>in</strong>g Him.<br />
But ra<strong>the</strong>r than face our s<strong>in</strong> and guilt, we blame God<br />
for leav<strong>in</strong>g us, and project our s<strong>in</strong> and guilt <strong>on</strong>to Him<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>r people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world; while secretly we seek<br />
vengeance <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r people and fear <strong>the</strong>ir vengeance<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st us. The ego's modus operandi is denial,<br />
dissociati<strong>on</strong>, projecti<strong>on</strong> and displacement. The truth<br />
about ourselves and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r is that we are all part <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e Christ.<br />
•<br />
The split m<strong>in</strong>d is represented by two pictures. One is<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's thought system which is symbolized by<br />
death. The frame around <strong>the</strong> ego's picture is <strong>the</strong><br />
special relati<strong>on</strong>ship. The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> frame is to<br />
distract us from <strong>the</strong> picture. The o<strong>the</strong>r picture is <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit's thought system which is <strong>the</strong> holy <strong>in</strong>stant<br />
symbolized by Light. We will look at <strong>the</strong>se two<br />
pictures and <strong>the</strong>ir frames later <strong>in</strong> this chapter.<br />
•<br />
Even as we are wak<strong>in</strong>g up to <strong>the</strong> delusi<strong>on</strong> and<br />
<strong>in</strong>sanity <strong>of</strong> believ<strong>in</strong>g we are a separate ego <strong>in</strong> a body,<br />
we still cl<strong>in</strong>g tenaciously to our special love and hate<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ships, believ<strong>in</strong>g that we are excepti<strong>on</strong>s<br />
somehow, and our relati<strong>on</strong>ships are grounded <strong>in</strong> true<br />
love, and those we hate are truly evil.
