Ma<strong>in</strong> Themes: Overcom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> four obstacles to<br />
peace. And s<strong>in</strong> versus error.<br />
Introducti<strong>on</strong>: This chapter addresses <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />
strategy and purpose for mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> body. The first<br />
three obstacles to peace address how <strong>the</strong> ego uses <strong>the</strong><br />
body as a distracti<strong>on</strong> to keep us out <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d,<br />
away from <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, and focused <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
The fourth obstacle to peace is <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> God's<br />
punishment for our s<strong>in</strong>, and also <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> God's<br />
unc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al love.<br />
First Obstacle to Peace: The desire to get rid <strong>of</strong> it.<br />
The attracti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> guilt.<br />
Sec<strong>on</strong>d Obstacle to Peace: The belief that <strong>the</strong> body is<br />
valuable for what it <strong>of</strong>fers. The attracti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Third Obstacle to Peace: The attracti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> death. The<br />
<strong>in</strong>corruptible body.<br />
Fourth Obstacle to Peace: The fear <strong>of</strong> God. The<br />
lift<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> veil.<br />
Also, we will look at <strong>the</strong> holy relati<strong>on</strong>ship and see<br />
how <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit uses <strong>the</strong> body as an <strong>in</strong>strument<br />
<strong>of</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>the</strong>r than attack.<br />
•<br />
We beg<strong>in</strong> with a statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciple. There is <strong>on</strong>e Will <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe and that<br />
is God's Will <strong>of</strong> love and perfect <strong>on</strong>eness. All else is<br />
a projecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego m<strong>in</strong>d, which is no power at<br />
all.<br />
•<br />
The ego's strategy is to c<strong>on</strong>v<strong>in</strong>ce us that <strong>the</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> from God really happened, s<strong>in</strong> is real<br />
which leads to guilt and <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> punishment. To<br />
avoid punishment <strong>the</strong> ego makes a body and world<br />
<strong>on</strong>to which it projects its s<strong>in</strong> and guilt. In truth <strong>the</strong><br />
separati<strong>on</strong> from God never happened, s<strong>in</strong> is not real,<br />
our guilt was based <strong>on</strong> a false premise, and God has<br />
no <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> punishment. If we get back to our<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d, and look at our s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear with <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit, we will realize our mistake <strong>in</strong> believ<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego's story, and we will choose for <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit <strong>in</strong>stead. Therefore, to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its special<br />
separate existence <strong>the</strong> ego uses <strong>the</strong> body and world to<br />
keep us out <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d and distracted by <strong>the</strong> world<br />
<strong>of</strong> bodies.<br />
CHAPTER NINETEEN<br />
THE ATTAINMENT OF PEACE<br />
66<br />
•<br />
S<strong>in</strong> is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sane belief that we are separate from God<br />
and greater than Him. We cannot separate ourselves<br />
from God, nor can we be greater than Him.<br />
Therefore <strong>the</strong>re is no s<strong>in</strong>, <strong>on</strong>ly an error <strong>in</strong> our<br />
identity, which can be corrected through Self<br />
Knowledge.<br />
•<br />
S<strong>in</strong> is <strong>the</strong> belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> and is <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> ego's religi<strong>on</strong>. Without s<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's Bible has no<br />
mean<strong>in</strong>g, value or purpose. Without s<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego<br />
dissolves <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>gness that it is.<br />
•<br />
S<strong>in</strong> is a required belief to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> our special<br />
separate existence. This is why we love c<strong>on</strong>flict, war,<br />
pa<strong>in</strong> and suffer<strong>in</strong>g — without s<strong>in</strong>, guilt, fear,<br />
c<strong>on</strong>flict, war, pa<strong>in</strong> and suffer<strong>in</strong>g we do not exist!<br />
•<br />
By fear<strong>in</strong>g punishment by God for our "s<strong>in</strong>," we have<br />
made God as <strong>in</strong>sane as we are. Would God punish<br />
His S<strong>on</strong> for a s<strong>in</strong> he cannot commit? Only <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />
<strong>in</strong>sane god would do so. The ego's god is a god <strong>of</strong><br />
wrath and vengeance — and <strong>the</strong> ego loves him so!<br />
For without a god <strong>of</strong> wrath, <strong>the</strong> ego melts <strong>in</strong>to<br />
noth<strong>in</strong>gness.<br />
•<br />
Guilt demands punishment which means that<br />
separati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> ego are real. This is <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />
attracti<strong>on</strong> to guilt. An error can be corrected, which<br />
is <strong>the</strong> ego's fear. If <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> realizes his error <strong>in</strong><br />
believ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong> (separati<strong>on</strong>) <strong>the</strong> ego is dead <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
spot. The ego lives <strong>on</strong>ly because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>'s power<br />
to believe <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>.<br />
•<br />
Guilt and s<strong>in</strong> go toge<strong>the</strong>r. Sometimes <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong><br />
emphasizes s<strong>in</strong>, o<strong>the</strong>r times guilt, but <strong>the</strong>y are<br />
virtually <strong>the</strong> same as <strong>the</strong>y coexist. S<strong>in</strong> and guilt are<br />
felt as a sense <strong>of</strong> selfishness <strong>in</strong> your daily life. With<br />
selfishness comes <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> loss and punishment.<br />
To avoid punishment <strong>the</strong> ego projects its selfishness<br />
<strong>on</strong>to o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world so it can ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its face <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>nocence and have o<strong>the</strong>rs be punished.<br />
•<br />
The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's strategy is to keep us<br />
distracted by <strong>the</strong> body and world so we will not get<br />
back to our m<strong>in</strong>d, realize our error, and choose for<br />
<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> ego. Once we have<br />
projected our s<strong>in</strong> and guilt (selfishness) out <strong>of</strong> our<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d and <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> bodies, we cannot correct
