Ma<strong>in</strong> Themes: In this chapter we address <strong>the</strong><br />
"authority problem" and <strong>the</strong> belief that we are <strong>in</strong><br />
c<strong>on</strong>flict with God. On <strong>the</strong> Heaven-Knowledge Chart,<br />
c<strong>on</strong>flict and <strong>the</strong> authority problem are represented by<br />
<strong>the</strong> terms battleground, victimizati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>on</strong>e or <strong>the</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r, and kill or be killed. The fundamental<br />
questi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> all philosophy and psychology are "Who<br />
am I?" and "From where do I come?" In this chapter<br />
we address <strong>the</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>, "Who is <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> my<br />
reality: God or myself?"<br />
We also look at <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al separati<strong>on</strong> from God <strong>in</strong><br />
which we believe we usurped His place <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> thr<strong>on</strong>e<br />
<strong>of</strong> creati<strong>on</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g ourselves as <strong>the</strong> creator <strong>of</strong><br />
ourselves. As separate egos we are not God-created,<br />
but self-created. As <strong>the</strong> ego develops its thought<br />
system, its purpose is to have us be so terrified <strong>of</strong><br />
be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d that we choose to leave <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d,<br />
make up a body with which we identify, leav<strong>in</strong>g us<br />
m<strong>in</strong>dless and ensur<strong>in</strong>g we will not change our m<strong>in</strong>d<br />
and choose to follow <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
ego. The belief we have really s<strong>in</strong>ned by separat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from God, and He is seek<strong>in</strong>g revenge, generates <strong>the</strong><br />
fear and provides <strong>the</strong> motivati<strong>on</strong> for leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d<br />
and mak<strong>in</strong>g a body and world <strong>on</strong>to which we can<br />
project our s<strong>in</strong> and guilt, and <strong>in</strong> which we can hide.<br />
The belief <strong>in</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> from God, <strong>the</strong> ultimate<br />
authority, is reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world as <strong>the</strong> authority<br />
problem: our problem with authority figures <strong>in</strong> which<br />
we feel victimized; and our problem as authority<br />
figures <strong>in</strong> which we are <strong>the</strong> victimizers. The c<strong>on</strong>flict<br />
which was born with <strong>the</strong> mistaken belief <strong>in</strong> our<br />
orig<strong>in</strong>al separati<strong>on</strong> from God is played out <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
battleground we call our lives.<br />
•<br />
God and <strong>the</strong> ego are mutually exclusive. God is <strong>the</strong><br />
Truth, and <strong>the</strong> Truth is absolute. The ego is illusory,<br />
and <strong>the</strong>re is no illusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Truth. God is our Fa<strong>the</strong>r,<br />
our Source. God is <strong>on</strong>e and we are <strong>on</strong>e with Him. We<br />
are not a body liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a world; we are spirit. The<br />
ego made <strong>the</strong> body and <strong>the</strong> world. If we were a body<br />
liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, <strong>the</strong> ego would be our fa<strong>the</strong>r. In<br />
truth, we are <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God, fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego. God<br />
is our Fa<strong>the</strong>r; not <strong>the</strong> ego. The S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God did not<br />
create himself because he is not a body liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />
world.<br />
•<br />
God did not leave us; we believe we left God. We<br />
decide to come back to God; God does not come<br />
CHAPTER ELEVEN<br />
GOD OR THE EGO<br />

back to us because he never left. When we believe<br />
God aband<strong>on</strong>ed us, we project it <strong>on</strong>to o<strong>the</strong>rs: our<br />
parents, family, friends and <strong>in</strong>timate o<strong>the</strong>rs, mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
ourselves l<strong>on</strong>ely victims <strong>of</strong> aband<strong>on</strong>ment. In reality<br />
<strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> and aband<strong>on</strong>ment never happened —<br />
this is <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement pr<strong>in</strong>ciple, <strong>the</strong> resoluti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong><br />
authority problem.<br />
•<br />
When we believed we separated from God we<br />
established <strong>the</strong> situati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> which our will was<br />
opposite from God's. God's Will is that we are <strong>on</strong>e<br />
with Him. Our will is that we be <strong>on</strong> our own and<br />
rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong> our own. God's will is that we come back<br />
to Him — that is <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict, <strong>the</strong> authority problem.<br />
•<br />
The belief <strong>in</strong> our orig<strong>in</strong>al separati<strong>on</strong> from God is <strong>the</strong><br />
root <strong>of</strong> all c<strong>on</strong>flict <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world we made. All c<strong>on</strong>flict<br />
am<strong>on</strong>g family, friends and lovers; or am<strong>on</strong>g nati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />
and political and religious groups is rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
belief <strong>in</strong> our separati<strong>on</strong> from God — <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
c<strong>on</strong>flict, <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al authority problem. The<br />
realizati<strong>on</strong> that <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> never happened is <strong>the</strong><br />
resoluti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> all c<strong>on</strong>flict and problems with authority<br />
<strong>in</strong> our world, because <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement resolves <strong>the</strong><br />
orig<strong>in</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>flict with God.<br />
•<br />
The darkness <strong>in</strong> which we hide has two shields: <strong>the</strong><br />
first shield is <strong>the</strong> darkness <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear <strong>in</strong> our<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d; and <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d shield is <strong>the</strong> body and world<br />
<strong>on</strong>to which we project our s<strong>in</strong> and guilt hop<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
avoid punishment by ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g our face <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>nocence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> God.<br />
•<br />
Our entire world is <strong>the</strong> projecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> a neurotic,<br />
psychotic and paranoid schizophrenic thought system<br />
called <strong>the</strong> ego. The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world is to provide<br />
a dump<strong>in</strong>g ground for <strong>the</strong> ego's delusi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, guilt<br />
and fear. To ensure its survival, <strong>the</strong> ego needs us to<br />
stay focused <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> world and out <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d,<br />
because if we go back to our m<strong>in</strong>d we will become<br />
aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's <strong>in</strong>sanity and choose <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit <strong>in</strong>stead. By observ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> "dynamics" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
ego we learn <strong>of</strong> its sickness; and with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Holy Spirit we can learn to choose aga<strong>in</strong>. God and<br />
<strong>the</strong> ego are mutually exclusive. We choose to<br />
identify with <strong>the</strong> ego and its delusi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict, s<strong>in</strong><br />
and guilt; or we identify with <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit and<br />
God's wholeness, <strong>in</strong>nocence and love.
