Ma<strong>in</strong> Theme: This chapter is a variati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first two Commandments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bible.<br />

From Exodus Chapter 20: "I am <strong>the</strong> Lord thy God<br />

which has brought <strong>the</strong>e out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> land <strong>of</strong> Egypt, out<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> b<strong>on</strong>dage. First Commandment: Thou<br />

shall have no o<strong>the</strong>r God's before me. Sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

Commandment: Thou shall not make unto <strong>the</strong>e any<br />

graven image or any likeness <strong>of</strong> any th<strong>in</strong>g that is <strong>in</strong><br />

Heaven above or that is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth beneath, or that<br />

is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water under <strong>the</strong> earth. Thou shall not bow<br />

down thyself to <strong>the</strong>m nor serve <strong>the</strong>m. For I, <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />

thy God, am a jealous God."<br />

Introducti<strong>on</strong>: In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>, <strong>the</strong> ego is <strong>the</strong> false god<br />

we make and worship. We make <strong>the</strong> ego and identify<br />

with it as if it is our self; we worship it, bow down to<br />

it and build shr<strong>in</strong>es to it. We celebrate our birthday<br />

and memorialize our death because we worship at <strong>the</strong><br />

shr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> false ego-self. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>, God is<br />

perfect wholeness and perfect love; God is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

reality; <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g separate from Him. The<br />

At<strong>on</strong>ement pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong> says <strong>the</strong><br />

separati<strong>on</strong> from God never happened, <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is no separate self, and <strong>the</strong> ego is an illusi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>, <strong>the</strong> first and orig<strong>in</strong>al idol is <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />

self image and its thought system with<strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

The ego is born with <strong>the</strong> belief that <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />

from God is real and is a s<strong>in</strong> that evokes guilt and<br />

fear <strong>of</strong> God's revenge. To "get rid" <strong>of</strong> its sense <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong><br />

and guilt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>the</strong> ego makes a body and<br />

world <strong>on</strong>to which it projects its s<strong>in</strong> and guilt, hop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its face <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>nocence and avoid <strong>the</strong> wrath<br />

<strong>of</strong> God. By mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> body and world <strong>the</strong> ego has<br />

its sec<strong>on</strong>d idol: <strong>the</strong> body and its special love and hate<br />

partners. The ego uses its idols <strong>of</strong> special<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ship, both love and hate, as a dump<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ground for its s<strong>in</strong> and guilt. The mak<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

worship<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> false idols is called sickness.<br />

•<br />

The ego is <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al idol made by <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God<br />

by believ<strong>in</strong>g he is separate from his Fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Worship<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al idol is <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God's<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al sickness. The sec<strong>on</strong>d idol made by <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> God is <strong>the</strong> body, <strong>on</strong>to which <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al sickness<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d is projected, so that <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al sickness<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>'s m<strong>in</strong>d is reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and its<br />

THE IDOLS OF SICKNESS<br />

special relati<strong>on</strong>ships <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world — both love and<br />

hate.<br />

•<br />

To understand and benefit from this <strong>Course</strong> it is<br />

crucial that you take <strong>the</strong> abstract c<strong>on</strong>cepts presented<br />

here and apply <strong>the</strong>m to yourself <strong>in</strong> your daily life <strong>in</strong> a<br />

very practical way. It is important to be vigilant <strong>of</strong><br />

your thoughts, feel<strong>in</strong>gs and all activities <strong>of</strong> your<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> your daily life, and turn to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit or<br />

Jesus for guidance. "This is not a course <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> play<br />

<strong>of</strong> ideas, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir practical applicati<strong>on</strong>."<br />

•<br />

The <strong>on</strong>ly true laws are <strong>the</strong> laws <strong>of</strong> God which are <strong>the</strong><br />

laws <strong>of</strong> love, <strong>on</strong>eness and eternal life.<br />

•<br />

The experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> protecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God is a direct<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> your Identity with God's love and<br />

<strong>on</strong>eness, and <strong>the</strong> complete absence <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

yourself and all be<strong>in</strong>g. God's protecti<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong><br />

knowledge and experience that you are <strong>on</strong>e with<br />

God, <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>on</strong>ly God, so <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g to be<br />

protected from.<br />

•<br />

Blasphemy is a Biblical term and is an expressi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

an attack <strong>on</strong> God; for example, when we take o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

gods before Him, when we are not reverent <strong>of</strong> God<br />

or are disrespectful toward Him. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Course</strong>,<br />

blasphemy is not <strong>of</strong> God, but is directed at yourself<br />

because you are blasphem<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st your true Self<br />

by believ<strong>in</strong>g you are <strong>the</strong> ego and body which is a<br />

parody and travesty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> who you are as<br />

Christ.<br />

•<br />

Sickness and health are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>on</strong>ly. The body<br />

is a projecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. Sickness is <strong>the</strong> belief that<br />

we are separate from God. Health is <strong>the</strong> realizati<strong>on</strong><br />

that we are <strong>on</strong>e with God. Only <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d has power<br />

to believe <strong>in</strong> sickness or health. Only <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d has<br />

<strong>the</strong> power to choose to deny <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> our Identity<br />

as God's S<strong>on</strong>, and identify with <strong>the</strong> ego's s<strong>on</strong> —<br />

which is <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

•<br />

Now we turn our attenti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

to choose. We do not know who we are as Christ, we<br />

do not know ourselves as be<strong>in</strong>gs that create as God<br />

does because we have chosen to push away <strong>the</strong><br />

memory <strong>of</strong> our Identity with <strong>the</strong> magnitude <strong>of</strong> God,<br />

and identify ourselves with <strong>the</strong> littleness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego.
