our error at its source which is <strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Therefore we beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> correcti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> our error by<br />

forgiv<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>rs, not for <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>in</strong>, but for <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> we<br />

have projected <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

•<br />

And now we turn to <strong>the</strong> first obstacle to peace — <strong>the</strong><br />

desire to get rid <strong>of</strong> it. We do not want peace because<br />

without c<strong>on</strong>flict and separati<strong>on</strong> we have no special<br />

separate existence. C<strong>on</strong>flict proves we are real and<br />

separate.<br />

•<br />

The little wall <strong>of</strong> hatred is <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> and guilt<br />

(selfishness) we project <strong>on</strong>to our bro<strong>the</strong>rs. The<br />

projecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong> and guilt is referred to as an attack.<br />

Believ<strong>in</strong>g we are separate from and <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict with<br />

God and our bro<strong>the</strong>rs, we feel justified <strong>in</strong> defend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ourselves and attack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m back. This is <strong>the</strong> first<br />

obstacle to peace we must overcome: <strong>the</strong> desire to<br />

get rid <strong>of</strong> peace.<br />

•<br />

The "messengers <strong>of</strong> fear" is an anthropomorphic<br />

symbol that refers to <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> project<strong>in</strong>g our<br />

s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> bodies. "Our lord<br />

and master" refers to s<strong>in</strong>, guilt, fear or <strong>the</strong> ego<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>Text</strong>. We actively seek and love to<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d fault with people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world; we love to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>demn and judge because by f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g guilt <strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs we believe we can ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> our <strong>in</strong>nocence.<br />

Many passages <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Text</strong> are disturb<strong>in</strong>g because<br />

<strong>the</strong>y represent all <strong>of</strong> us as separate egos. However,<br />

<strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> who we are is Christ Who does not<br />

attack and cannot be preyed up<strong>on</strong>. To realize <strong>the</strong><br />

truth <strong>of</strong> who we are we must be will<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

obstacles <strong>of</strong> darkness to <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit<br />

Who rem<strong>in</strong>ds us <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> Christ <strong>in</strong> all <strong>of</strong> us.<br />

The ego made <strong>the</strong> body and world so it could project<br />

its s<strong>in</strong>, guilt and fear out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

its face <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>nocence. Once we f<strong>in</strong>d s<strong>in</strong> and guilt <strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs we feel justified <strong>in</strong> attack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Next we look at <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d obstacle to peace: <strong>the</strong><br />

belief that <strong>the</strong> body is valuable, and <strong>the</strong> attracti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

pa<strong>in</strong>.<br />

We love to be treated unfairly, attacked and<br />

mistreated because it proves we are <strong>in</strong>nocent victims,<br />

and that s<strong>in</strong> and guilt are outside <strong>of</strong> us <strong>in</strong> our<br />

victimizers. Pa<strong>in</strong> means I am real. Identify<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

<strong>the</strong> body provides <strong>the</strong> ego a "home." Pa<strong>in</strong> and<br />

pleasure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body seem to witness to <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ego's special separate existence. This is <strong>the</strong><br />

attracti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and pa<strong>in</strong> that we must<br />

overcome to realize <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> our eternal Identity<br />

with Christ <strong>in</strong> Spirit.<br />

•<br />

I am attracted to f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g guilt <strong>in</strong> you because that is<br />

how I believe I can avoid guilt and pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> myself.<br />

•<br />

The third obstacle to peace, <strong>the</strong> attracti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> death,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> fourth obstacle to peace, <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> God, are<br />

closely related.<br />

•<br />

By br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> obstacles to peace to <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong><br />

awareness we are able to make a c<strong>on</strong>scious choice<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> ego. The ego<br />

makes <strong>the</strong> body as a distracti<strong>on</strong> so <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God<br />

will not choose <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.<br />

•<br />

The Universal Purpose is <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement. The body<br />

has no purpose apart from <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

assigns to it. The Holy Spirit <strong>in</strong> our right m<strong>in</strong>d uses<br />

<strong>the</strong> body as a communicati<strong>on</strong> device to extend<br />

forgiveness and <strong>the</strong> At<strong>on</strong>ement. The ego uses <strong>the</strong><br />

body as a weap<strong>on</strong> to prove and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego's<br />

special separate existence. We, <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> God as <strong>the</strong><br />

decisi<strong>on</strong> maker, determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>the</strong> body is to<br />

serve by choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ego or <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit as our<br />

guide and teacher.<br />

•<br />

The "t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea" is <strong>the</strong> idea that <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />

from God is real. This "t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea" <strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong><br />

is embodied by <strong>the</strong> body <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. The body is<br />

<strong>the</strong> t<strong>in</strong>y mad idea <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Sickness and heal<strong>in</strong>g are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, not <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

Dissociati<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong> attempt to split <strong>of</strong>f two<br />

irrec<strong>on</strong>cilable thought systems <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d by<br />

ignor<strong>in</strong>g or dissociat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. This is referred<br />

to as <strong>the</strong> split m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chart, and is represented<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right m<strong>in</strong>d, and <strong>the</strong> ego <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wr<strong>on</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>d. Dissociati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> split m<strong>in</strong>d, is<br />

healed by br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> darkness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ego to <strong>the</strong><br />

light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.<br />

•<br />

Ideas leave not <strong>the</strong>ir source. Sickness is <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong><br />

for guilt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. The ego's goal is to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its<br />

separate existence. By hav<strong>in</strong>g us identify our self<br />

with <strong>the</strong> body, it ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s itself, and keeps us from<br />

questi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g our true identity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. By<br />

believ<strong>in</strong>g sickness is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body, not <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>the</strong><br />

ego keeps us focused <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s its<br />

separate existence — until we choose aga<strong>in</strong>.
