Andy’s studio, set amongst oak and larch woods with beautiful views of the
hills, was voted one of the five best visitor experiences in the 2012 Spring
Fling. Wheel thrown porcelain and stoneware pots that are wood fired to
1300.C. From delicate porcelain beakers with pale celadon glazes; to a new
range of slab built stoneware dishes that are simply decorated with slips and
glaze, on clay that owes its rich texture and colour to the granite sand from
the Galloway hills. Also his recent paintings and work on paper.
directions: Take the A714 north from Newton Stewart for six miles. At Clachaneasy
turn right. Continue straight for two miles. Minniwick is a right-hand turn directly
after a sign for Holm.
recommendations: House o Hill Hotel (1). The House o Hill (www.houseohill.
co.uk) is a great place for food. An interesting menu, local ales, and a very warm
welcome. Loch Trool (2). Breathtaking views over western Galloway’s finest loch
and glen. Beautiful oakwoods leading down to the water’s edge, and a 2 hour
walk around the loch.

I paint outdoors whenever I can, my aim is to capture a sense of place and
mood at a certain moment in time. Usually the effect of light is my focus,
a quite plain scene can be transformed by atmospheric light into a dramatic
view. I paint in oils, the rich colours and textural qualities appeal to me,
I like to be able to see the paths an artist takes in his or her work, to see
brush strokes or marks give a work integrity.
directions: Take the A75 from Dumfries, take the first Newton Stewart turning
(A712) then turn left immediately onto the B7079. Take the next right
onto Race Green Avenue and then right again, the Studio is on the left.
