Current work <strong>is</strong> based on notes and sketchbooks made during research over<br />

many months into new themes and ideas, based around h<strong>is</strong>tory, archaeology<br />

and wildlife. I make notes accompanied by drawings, done on the spot, in<br />

the landscape or sometimes in a museum. As ideas develop imaginatively,<br />

elements of the original sketches are combined into new, experimental work.<br />

directions: From A75 at Crocketford, to A712. After 5 miles, turn right: ‘Lochenkit,<br />

Drumhumphry, Auchenhay’. Drive 2 miles along single track road, passing<br />

Drumhumphry Farm, through moorland and passing a cottage. <strong>The</strong> road r<strong>is</strong>es<br />

and Auchenhay Cottage <strong>is</strong> on the left, the white house by a stand of Scots pine.<br />

recommendations: Designs Gallery (Purple route 6). Castle Douglas. Fabulous<br />

food and atmosphere, the cafe at Designs Gallery with conservatory and garden,<br />

<strong>is</strong> always a treat. Good books, crafts and changing exhibitions make it special.<br />

times of the year (winter <strong>is</strong> especially good, for barnacle geese), the RSPB Reserve<br />

at Mersehead, off the A710, near Caulkerbush has a trail which takes you along<br />

the sands on the edge of the magnificent Solway Firth.<br />

V<strong>is</strong>itors to the studio will see new work in painting, sound and printmaking,<br />

that <strong>is</strong> a response to the art<strong>is</strong>t’s fondness for trail-running and hillwalking.<br />

<strong>The</strong> work seeks to locate these activities within the context of a<br />

contemporary sublime. <strong>The</strong>re will also be work relating to the Isle of Tiree:<br />

the workings of the weather, the sea and traces of human activity through<br />

time and place.<br />

directions: From Dumfries bypass take A76 north, signposted Kilmarnock.<br />

At Holywood village take B729, left, signposted Dunscore, Moniaive. At Nether<br />

Gribton Farm, take left fork, signposted Newtonairds. After 3 miles, and long avenue<br />

of trees, turn right at Newtonairds Lodge. Follow driveway, bearing right, to stable<br />

house at top.<br />

recommendations: <strong>The</strong>re will be a pop-up cafe in our kitchen (7), serving tea and<br />

cake. Head towards Shawhead, turn right just before Shawhead village, following<br />

signs for Glenkiln. Th<strong>is</strong> leads to the Glenkiln Sculptures (8) works placed in an open<br />

landscape setting by the landowner, Sir William Keswick. <strong>The</strong>re are six sculptures:<br />

one by Auguste Rodin, four by Henry Moore and one by Jacob Epstein.<br />
