I am continuing to employ Japanese woodblock printing techniques
for my illustrative designs of birds, flowers and landscapes. I have also
been experimenting with designs that focus on colour rather than form.
The inspiration for these more abstract works is still firmly rooted in the
natural world – more specifically the amazing colour combinations that can
be found therein. Visitors will be able to see examples of both types of print,
as well as the tools and materials used to make them.
directions: From the A75 take the A711 into Kirkcudbright. From St Mary Street
turn right onto High Street and the WASPS Studios are on your right. My studio
is up on the second floor of Cannonwalls.
recommendations: The Masonic Arms (16). The Masonic Arms (19 Castle Street,
Kirkcudbright, DG6 4JA) is great for guest real ales, and has a wide selection of
international bottled beers too. Town Walk (17). Take the circular walk around
Kirkcudbright, starting in the Harbour square, going via Millburn Lane, then on to
St Cuthbert’s Cemetery with fantastic views of the town, and finally a stroll through
Barhill Wood.

I am interested in how our response to paintings is dependent on our
prior expectation of what an art subject can be. I am drawn to objects
or places that have pattern or beauty as a result of functional design, as
opposed to any deliberate aesthetic choice. My recent work has focussed
on documenting decaying buildings in Dumfries and Galloway and beyond.
In doing this I hope to give fleeting moments a permanence they would
not usually be afforded.
