Most of my lino cut prints started out as illustrations comm<strong>is</strong>sioned for books<br />
and magazines. Over the years I have illustrated many different subjects:<br />
gardening, country life, food, and all of Shakespeare’s plays. In the studio,<br />
v<strong>is</strong>itors can roll ink onto a lino cut and make a print to take home, using my<br />
antique cast iron press.<br />
directions: From the A76 at Thornhill take the A702 following signs for Penpont<br />
and Moniaive. Leave Penpont on the Moniaive road and in a mile take the right<br />
fork signposted Tynron. Go through the village, over the bridge, turn left at the<br />
T-junction. Follow the road quarter of a mile; Lannhall Cottage <strong>is</strong> the large<br />
steading on the right.<br />

<strong>is</strong> the place to go. One mile south of Thornhill on the A76. You may well have to<br />

Scaur Water takes you into the heart of the hills (DG3 4NG). <strong>The</strong> road <strong>is</strong> signposted<br />
on the A702 just west of Penpont. Take a picnic and eat it beside the burn in the<br />
company of sheep and curlew.<br />

My studio, on Nithsdale’s western slopes, offers a warm welcome to <strong>Spring</strong><br />
<strong>Fling</strong> v<strong>is</strong>itors, with tea, coffee and home-baked cakes to enjoy while you<br />
stroll around the sculpture-filled garden or take in the smaller pieces indoors.<br />
You will see work in dry-stone, large and small carvings, lettering and relief<br />
carvings, and some pieces in mixed materials. My work reflects my interests<br />
in the natural world and in such activities as farming, quarrying and<br />
gardening. Time permitting, I’ll be giving brief demonstrations/explanations<br />
of some of the tools, materials and techniques that I use.<br />
directions: From the south, turn off the A76 at Auldgirth shop, then right after half<br />
a mile, signposted Penpont. After roughly three and a half miles, pass a pretty little<br />
lodge-house on your left, take the next left, then follow the arrows. From Penpont,<br />
head towards Auldgirth and follow the arrows.<br />
recommendations: Penpont Tearoom (3). Right on the crossroads in Penpont,<br />
the tea room offers delicious home-made food and drinks, with a warm welcome.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Mull (9). A quick walk or drive to the top of the hill above my studio will give<br />
you the most stunning panoramic views across beautiful mid and upper Nithsdale.<br />
Well worth it.<br />
