SUFFOLK.<br />

The Suffolk Dun used to be' celebrated in almost every part of the<br />

kingdom, on account of the extraordinary quantity of milk that she<br />

yielded. The dun color is now, however, rarely seen in Suffolk, and<br />

rejected as an almost certain indication of* inferiority. The breed<br />

is polled.<br />

The Suffolk, like the Norfolk beast, undoubtedly sprung from the<br />

Galloway ; but it is shorter in the leg, broader and rounder than the<br />

^Norfolk, with a greater propensity to fatten, and reaching to greater<br />

weights.<br />

SUFFOLK COW.<br />

The prevailing and best cdlors are "red, red and white, brindled,<br />

and a yellowish cream color. The bull is valued if he is of a pure<br />

unmingled red color. .<br />

Exaggerated accounts have been given of the milking of the Suffolk<br />

cow, and she is not inferior to any other breed in the quantity<br />

of milk that she yields. In the height of the season some of these<br />

cows will give as much as 8 gallons of milk in the day ; and 6 gal-<br />

lons is not an unusual quantity. The produce of butter, however, is<br />

not in proportion to the quantity of milk.<br />

The bulls are rarely suffered to .iYe after they are three years
