sentiment has doubtless passed through the<br />

minds of many when they have endeavoured to<br />

concentrate their thoughts upon the Re-union<br />

of Christendom. The task seems so hopeless ;<br />

the way to He-union so weary : the obstacles<br />

in the way so insurmountable ; and, to some<br />

minds, the positive excellence of the result so<br />

doubtful. And so it happens that many good<br />

and earnest men turn from it as from a problem<br />

too hard, and perhaps, after all, unnecessary<br />

to solve. By others it is vehemently urged that<br />

speculation on the possibility or probability of<br />

Re-union, or contemplation of the ways and<br />

means thereto, is unproductive labour, and it
