the usurper and regicide. It can scarcely be<br />

said at this day that the party we are describing<br />

did wrong. The bloodless revolution which<br />

restored the monarchy was, as we know, the<br />

result. Thus it cannot surely be contended<br />

that the exigency of political truth required on<br />

the part of each individual who embraced it<br />

immediate individual action in the way which<br />

extreme moralists would insist.<br />

But political is not moral truth, much less is<br />

it<br />

religious, says an objector. Still all truth of<br />

what sort or kind soever it be is of GOD : and<br />

that one fact alone is sufficient to show that<br />

there is no radical distinction in the various<br />

kinds of truth. We are not, as it will be<br />

seen, speaking of truth in the abstract, but of<br />

certain concrete truths, known and acknow<br />

ledged to be such by any given individual.<br />

What is he to do with them when he has got<br />

them ? No one will contend that all truths are<br />

equally important nor that equal necessity lies<br />

upon a person to make known a law which he<br />

has discovered in<br />

physical science, and a vital<br />

truth of the Gospel which has been borne in upon<br />

his conviction with unusual force. Still all<br />

truths must be acted on in their degree, and<br />

we must regulate our conduct at all times in<br />

reference to them at the risk of incurring the<br />
