viving Catholic Principle
in the English
Church ; the religions and monastic states are
again held in honour ; and sisters of charity
and mercv, as well as other sisterhoods, are

established in many places with the full ap
proval of the ecclesiastical authorities, and to
the oreat edification of the neighbourhoods

wherein they dwell. Some Catholics talk of

these attempts to restore the monastic life in
the Anglican Church, as if it were a mere sham.

But why should not the monastic life be rei/
stored amongst Anglicans, while it has
always been preserved among the Greeks, the
Xestorians, and Monophy sites of the East ?
No Catholic talks of the Russian monks, or the
monks of Mount Athos,
as sham monks. It is
admitted eyen that there are monks among the
Buddhists : why, then, in the name of Common

the monastic state in their communion, without
raisin a bigotted and ill-conditioned sneer from

some Catholics,, who ought to be the first to rejoice
at this act of homage to the soundness of those
principles which Catholicity has ever upheld,
but which hitherto Anglicanism had stoutly
contradicted ? For ourselves we are at a loss
to understand what possible interest of Catho
licity, those Catholics, who take this line of
