L THE EXIGENCY OF TRUTH.<br />

NO one, I suppose, would question the<br />

obligation that lies upon a man to act in<br />

some way upon known truth the very instant<br />

it becomes part of his consciousness ; and yet<br />

there are persons who do so act, whom we are<br />

far from esteeming either wise or morally right.<br />

Whether the subject-matter be worldly policy,<br />

morals, or religion, no man is emancipated from<br />

the necessity of judging how he is to carry his<br />

newly-acquired convictions into practice.<br />

Let us first take a case of worldly policy, and<br />

it shall be historical, as lifting it out of the<br />

category of possibilities<br />

into that of actual<br />

experience. During the great Rebellion a very<br />

considerable party who had opposed the exer<br />

cise of the Royal prerogative as unconstitutional<br />

and wrong, and had proved, therefore, the most
