of lie-union is dismissed as a beautiful but<br />

unsubstantial vision ; a fascinating day-dream,<br />

which mav find a welcome in the bosom of the<br />

enthusiast and the zealot, but attracts merely a<br />

moment s thought from the philosopher, and<br />

nothing whatever from the man of business.<br />

Such are pretty much the arguments, or<br />

rather the foregone conclusions usually put<br />

forth by the writers and talkers who claim to<br />

represent the practical opinions of the age.<br />

They profess to appeal to common sense, and<br />

have but little patience with those who are<br />

sufficiently infatuated to look upon religion as<br />

in any way mysterious or at variance with the<br />

temper of society. But as the matter of this<br />

humble contribution to thoughts upon the lie-<br />

union of Christendom is addressed principally<br />

to those to whom that lie-union presents some<br />

thing more than a fanciful and visionary form,<br />

the writer conceives that it is not his business<br />

now to deal with such sceptical objections, but<br />

to address himself to those who sincerely believe<br />

that a Re-union of dogmatic Christianity is in<br />

itself a grand and noble object.<br />

Those who watch with even moderate atten<br />

tion the course that religious controversy is<br />

apparently taking, cannot but arrive at the<br />

conclusion that the coining struggle must
