Church of CHRIST here upon earth ; and that<br />

the souls of the faithful departed are benefited<br />

by the prayers and alms of their fellow<br />

Christians on earth, and especially by the most<br />

Holy Sacrifice of the Body and Blood of CHRIST.<br />

Upon all these points and others also relating<br />

to free will, original sin, predestination, and<br />

good works, the Eastern Church is equally ex<br />

plicit, and, without an explicit acknowledgment<br />

of these vital Catholic truths, she will never<br />

form a union with the Anglican Church, or any<br />

other body of Protestants.<br />

We need scarcely say that upon all these<br />

points our own Latin Catholic Church is equally<br />

explicit, and with us there is one other point,<br />

which we at least regard as equally vital, and<br />

that is the acknowledgment of the Primacy of<br />

S. Peter s Chair : we cannot see how without<br />

this, it is possible to preserve any unity in the<br />

Christian Church. The Greeks acknowledge<br />

with ourselves that our LORD conferred the<br />

Primacy originally upon S. Peter, but they<br />

assert that after S. Peter s death it was be<br />

queathed to the Church, and that the Church<br />

had the power of conferring it, or not, upon<br />

any individual episcopal see. They acknowledge<br />
