Pastoral ; it would be unreasonable to do so,<br />

it was addressed to the Archbishop s own flock,<br />

not to Anglicans : its arguments therefore do<br />

not touch us. They have been said to be<br />

founded on assumptions that have been met<br />

and answered over and over again, that the<br />

Archbishop knows this better than most men ;<br />

but that nevertheless he ignores the fact, and<br />

writes on calmly and grandly, as though his<br />

assertions never had been questioned, and<br />

never could be. This is sometimes said of that<br />

Pastoral, but we must remember, that he is<br />

addressing persons whom he has a right to<br />

suppose admit his premisses, and who must<br />

therefore accept<br />

his conclusions. It is for them,<br />

not for an Anglican, to see and judge how far<br />

those premisses must be thus admitted, and<br />

whether the conclusions drawn from them are<br />

logical and seeing, that<br />

just.<br />

necessity accept those premisses, and admit the<br />

conclusions, any Re-union with them is hope<br />

less. As surely as the Protestantism of England<br />

must be rooted out, so surely must the Ultrai/<br />

montanism of Rome be forgotten, before there<br />

can be peace,<br />

or the hope of<br />
