at its divided map, numbering as many
Churches as continents, I had almost said, as
countries, and they
too often as diverse in
ecclesiastical polity as in constitutional prin
ciples ? Well may we exclaim with the Bishop
of Modrusch, who so eloquently addressed
the fathers at the fifth Lateran Council :*
