hold as deductions from these primary truths,<br />

which, however dangerous o we may believe them<br />

to be, do not amount to formal heresy. Purga<br />

torial fire is one of them, and the whole system<br />

of Indulgences ; another is Transubstantiation,<br />

which to many, when not carefully explained,<br />

might seem to be a near approach to the error<br />

of the Monophysites. There are very numerous<br />

opinions regarding Justification and Grace<br />

which are hard to reconcile with the primary<br />

truths as stated in the Creed, but which the<br />

Church has nevertheless been always very<br />

chary of pronouncing heretical.<br />

Further than this there are many absolute<br />

truths which are counterbalanced by others<br />

equally absolute, and which depend upon<br />

circumstances as to whether they are to be<br />

considered as rightly or wrongly advanced.<br />

Thus S. Augustine opposing the reception of<br />

appeals from Africa at Rome, was rightly<br />

while S. Thomas<br />

opposing an admitted abuse ;<br />

a Becket, opposing the tyranny of the first of<br />

the Plantagenets, and invoking the aid of the<br />

spiritual power of the Pope, against the general<br />

sentiment of the country, is rightly accounted<br />

a martyr.<br />

When, therefore, we are told very generally<br />

that a truth when once recognised by us as of<br />

Divine obligation is to be acted upon, we admit<br />

the necessity of immediate and decisive action
