The authority for all Kitual must, I suppose,<br />

so far as it is binding upon Catholics, rest upon<br />

a consensus of the Catholic Church. This is<br />

allowed upon all hands, even by Anglicans.<br />

Would it not then be really the best course for<br />

all who hold this principle to endeavour in the<br />

next place to try and ascertain, not what points<br />

of Ritual are not Catholic, but those which are?<br />

And when we have ascertained any point which<br />

we are convinced is neither especially Eastern<br />

nor especially Western, but the heritage of both<br />

alike, ought we not at once heartily and honestly<br />

to it put into<br />

practice?<br />

excuse there is for neglecting them.<br />

But there is a sad weakness somewhere in<br />

Anglican principles, or rather in Anglican prac<br />

tice. Anglicans argue that the points<br />
