a humble worshipper.<br />

I do not of course mean that these are in any<br />

degree primary motives for the adoption of a<br />

high Ritual they are but secondary ; neverthe<br />

less as such, they have an immense value. Our<br />

Ritual makes educated men enquire and think ;<br />

while it comes home at once to the heart,<br />

and satisfies the religious instincts of the<br />

uneducated poor man ; and to the outer<br />

world, to the power-seeking, mammon-loving,<br />

self-satisfied, self-indulgent, self-worshipping<br />

world, it rings out the Most Holy Name in<br />

tones so high and clear, that the Prince of this<br />

world, maddened with rage, tears his victim<br />

ere he leaves him, and casts him down wallow<br />

ing and foaming. Such I apprehend to be a<br />

true account of the impotent fury of so<br />

large a<br />

portion of the popular press of England, and of<br />

the mobs hounded on it. by<br />

This is not a fitting ~ occasion to discuss a<br />

question, which is purely an Anglican one,<br />

beyond the point where it touches the more<br />

general subject of this paper. Let me, however,<br />

say this one word, that while we none of us<br />

advocate a rough, uncharitable, forcing of Ritual<br />

upon congregations unprepared, and unwilling<br />

to receive it, we cannot always wait to be asked<br />

for it : we know that Ritual is not only the<br />
