empirical foundation. Through his <strong>in</strong>-depth study of the Hopi language of the<br />

southwestern US, Whorf posited, <strong>in</strong> essence, that the categories of one’s<br />

particular language are much more than simple mediators of thought. He saw<br />

them as be<strong>in</strong>g the “shapers” of the very thought patterns they embodied: “The<br />

world is presented <strong>in</strong> a kaleidoscopic flux of impressions which has to be<br />

organized by our m<strong>in</strong>ds-and this means largely by the l<strong>in</strong>guistic systems <strong>in</strong><br />

our m<strong>in</strong>ds” (Whorf 1956: 153). The ma<strong>in</strong> objective ofarema<strong>in</strong>s, to this day,<br />

to study the “l<strong>in</strong>guistic systems <strong>in</strong> our m<strong>in</strong>d,” as Whorf so eloquently put it.
