The irony, of course, is that many archaeologists are similarly loath to en<br />

tertain the possibility that psychosocial interactions and esoteric beliefs of<br />

prehistoric technicians directly shaped not only their material practices but<br />

also their social reproduction writ large. I no longer believe this parallel is a<br />

interacting with my colleagues – but mostly from those with whom I disa<br />

greed on substantive issues regarding prehistoric technology. What struck<br />

What this essay explores is the disturbing resemblance I sensed between the<br />

discursive strategies of the dominant few (in controlling the terms of debate)<br />

and how we talked about the role of skill and knowledge in ancient technical<br />

practice. Interestingly, while as a group we never quite got around to dis<br />

cussing the “social reproduction” theme of the conference, we nonetheless<br />

promoted our own social reproduction at every turn. And this is why I believe<br />

I sketched Figure 1 (“Dominant and Domineering Themes re: “Skilled Pro<br />

strategy to keep me from jumping out a window during some of our more<br />

fractious discussions. As I began to perceive (and wince at) the formation of<br />

antagonistic intellectual camps and the crystallization of distinctly opposite<br />

viewpoints (which drew pleasure from misrepresenting each other), I was<br />

struck by the parallel I was witnessing to larger trends currently pervading<br />
