In Northern, Central and Eastern Europe, the Group is<br />

developing its positions primarily in the specialty products market.<br />

In <strong>2011</strong>, TOTAL continued to expand its direct presence in the<br />

growing markets of Eastern Europe, in particular for lubricants.<br />

The Group intends to accelerate the growth of its specialty<br />

products business in Russia, Ukraine and the Balkans through the<br />

development of its direct presence in these markets since 2008.<br />

AS24, which is active in twenty-six European countries, continued<br />

to expand its network, exceeding the milestone of 600 service<br />

stations and opening new outlets in two new countries, Ukraine<br />

(<strong>2011</strong>) and Georgia (early 2012). The AS24 network is expected to<br />

continue to grow, mainly through expansion in the Mediterranean<br />

Basin and Russia, by strengthening its position in strategic<br />

countries and through its toll payment card service, which covers<br />

more than seventeen countries.<br />

3.1.2.2. Africa & the Middle East<br />

TOTAL is the leading marketer of petroleum products on the African<br />

continent, with a market share of 14% (1) . Following the acquisition<br />

of marketing and logistics assets in Kenya and Uganda in 2009,<br />

the Group runs more than 3,500 service stations in more than forty<br />

countries and operates major networks in South Africa, Nigeria,<br />

Kenya and Morocco. As part of the optimization of its portfolio,<br />

the Group divested its subsidiary in Benin in late 2010.<br />

TOTAL also has a large presence in Turkey and Lebanon, and is<br />

developing a network of large service stations in Jordan.<br />

In the Middle East, the Group is active mainly in the specialty<br />

products market and is pursuing its growth strategy in the region,<br />

notably through the production and marketing of lubricants.<br />

3.1.2.3. Asia-Pacific<br />

At year-end <strong>2011</strong>, TOTAL was present in nearly twenty countries<br />

in the Asia-Pacific region, primarily in the specialty products market.<br />

The Group is developing its position as a fuel marketer in the<br />

region, in particular in China. TOTAL operates service stations in<br />

Pakistan, the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, and is a significant<br />

player in the Pacific Islands.<br />

In China, the Group operated nearly 160 service stations at<br />

year-end <strong>2011</strong> through two TOTAL/Sinochem joint ventures.<br />

In India, TOTAL is expected to open in early 2012 its first<br />

lubricants, bitumen, special fluids and additives technical support<br />

center outside Europe.<br />

In Vietnam, TOTAL continues to strengthen its position in the<br />

specialty products market. The Group has be<strong>com</strong>e one of the<br />

leaders in the Vietnamese lubricants market due to the acquisitions<br />

of assets at year-end 2009.<br />

3.1.2.4. Americas<br />

In Latin America and the Caribbean, TOTAL is active in nearly<br />

twenty countries, primarily in the specialty products market.<br />

In the Caribbean, the Group holds a significant position in the fuel<br />

distribution business, which was strengthened by the acquisition<br />

in 2008 of marketing and logistics assets in Puerto Rico, Jamaica<br />

and the Virgin Islands.<br />

In North America, TOTAL markets specialty products, mainly<br />

lubricants, and is continuing to grow with the acquisition at yearend<br />

2009 of lubricant assets in the province of Quebec in Canada.<br />

TOTAL is active in the biodiesel and biogasoline sectors. In <strong>2011</strong>,<br />

TOTAL produced and blended 494 kt of ethanol (2) in gasoline at its<br />

European refineries (3) and several oil depots (<strong>com</strong>pared to 464 kt<br />

in 2010 and 510 kt in 2009) and 1,859 kt of VOME (4) in diesel at its<br />

European refineries (5) and several oil depots (<strong>com</strong>pared to 1,737 kt<br />

in 2010 and 1,655 kt in 2009).<br />

TOTAL, in partnership with the leading <strong>com</strong>panies in this area,<br />

is developing second generation biofuels derived from biomass.<br />

TOTAL is also working with leading worldwide public and private<br />

scientific partners on biochemical and thermochemical biomass<br />

conversion.<br />

The Group is thus participating in French, European and<br />

international bioenergy development programs. As part of this,<br />

TOTAL is involved in two demonstration projects:<br />

– BioTfueL, which aims to develop technology to convert biomass<br />

into biodiesel; and<br />

– Futurol, an R&D project for cellulosic bioethanol, which intends to<br />

develop and promote on an industrial scale a production process<br />

for bioethanol by fermentation of non-food lignocellulosic biomass.<br />
