Near the h<strong>and</strong> beneath the bird, is the strigil<br />

accompanied by the vase <strong>of</strong> oil, " or rather the<br />

xistrolecito, a well-known symbol <strong>of</strong> bath <strong>and</strong><br />

palestra." <strong>The</strong>se are called strigil <strong>and</strong> guttus in<br />

Smith's Dictionary <strong>of</strong> <strong>An</strong>tiqttities. <strong>The</strong> square<br />

tablet in all the plaques is, according to Minervini, a<br />

tabella representing athletic laws <strong>of</strong> the gymnasium<br />

<strong>and</strong> palestra. I prefer to follow the example <strong>of</strong><br />

Jahn <strong>and</strong> Evans, by saying I do not know what it<br />

is. On comparing them together no c<strong>and</strong>id reader<br />

will deny that all these moulds were certainly in-<br />

tended for the same purpose, particularly as duplicates<br />

were found so far apart as Pozzuoli <strong>and</strong><br />

Taranto.<br />

Although very different in the general arrangement<br />

<strong>of</strong> the objects represented upon it, yet the<br />

lamp shows so much resemblance, <strong>and</strong> it has so<br />

many symbols belonging to the other combinations,<br />

that it is but reasonable to consider them upon<br />

the lamp as representing the same ideas or cult<br />

as upon the plaques. In the centre is a winged
