THE EVIL EYE
charms and amulets, some of which are depicted in
these pages.
Having no pet theories to propound, I have
been under no temptation either to suppress or
to exaggerate ;
to hide inconsistencies.
consequently
I have not been careful
I have only further to express my obligation
to several kind friends, especially to the Rev. F.
W. Weaver for having read the proofs—a work
for which I must confess to having myself an evil
eye ; to Mr. Neville Rolfe and Dr. Meredith for
several valuable hints and investigations ; and
others for the loan of rare books.
to
I have also to thank Miss Twining and
Mr. John Romilly Allen for kind permission to
copy illustrations from their respective works.
Messrs. G. Bell and Sons, Mr. David Nutt, and
Mr. John Murray have also permitted me to do
the like from books of which they hold the copy-
right, and I desire to recognise the obligation.
I believe that I have given my authority for
every statement, except those put forward on my
own responsibility. If in any case I have failed to
do so, I now desire to thank my unknown in-
formant, and to assure him that the omission of his
name, or of his book, has been unintentional.
