Egyptians, and whose language is substantially the same as that<br />

of the ancient Egyptians, arranged their Vocabularies in this way,<br />

they must be reproducing a system that had been in use among<br />

their remote ancestors thousands of years earlier. Champollion-<br />

Figeac accepted his brother's arguments, and arranged the words<br />

of the Dictionary according to the order of the Sign-list composed<br />

by him, and printed in his earlier work.<br />

<strong>The</strong> following paragraph will explain the general system of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Coptic</strong><br />

arranging words in a <strong>Coptic</strong> Vocabulary, the common native names<br />

for which are JW.OTKI or JULOKI, and 6"Xo(T or cTXootf~e , i.e. Scala,<br />

" steps " or " stair." A typical example of such a Scala is given<br />

in the bilingual <strong>Coptic</strong> and Arabic MS. in Brit. Mus. Orient 1325,<br />
