AA (Alcoholics Anonymous). Worldwide self-help organization<br />
lonsistinq of a fellowship of recovering alcoholics whose<br />
Fjrimdry purpose is to "stay sober and help other alcoholics to<br />
ichieve sobriety. "<br />
ADAMS (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Management Seminar). ADAMS<br />
:onsists cf three courses: (1) ADAMS for Leaders is a course<br />
:hat enaDles commanding officers, XOs, OICs, CMCs, and COBS to<br />
?stablish dnd maintain an effective command alcohol and drug<br />
3nuse prevection program; (2) ADAMS for Supervisors is a course<br />
;or E5 and above that teaches <strong>Navy</strong> policy and supervisory<br />
-esponsibilities in the command's alcohol and drug abuse<br />
~3reventlop program; and (3) ADAMS Facilitator is a course which<br />
6 certification process that enables members who<br />
:ompleted :raining to facilitate ADAMS training to command<br />
:Iersonne I .<br />
ADCO (Alcohol and Drug Control Officer). ADCOs are assigned at<br />
second, thild, and fourth echelon commands. ADCOs oversee<br />
?Lcohol and drug abuse prevention programs in their activities<br />
~nd dre responsible for all subordinate command's compliance<br />
vlth policies and procedures outlined in this instruction.<br />
Addiction. Addiction is characterized physiologically by<br />
tolerance ithe need for a great amount of the drug to achieve a<br />
lesired state) and withdrawal symptoms (i.e., varying from<br />
~ncomfortabLe to serious convulsions) that are relieved by<br />

Administrative Screening. Process by which the command DAPA<br />
-01Lects bdsic information (review of health records,<br />
;upervisor-y comments, evaluations, etc. ) prior to a medical<br />
;creening. Basic administrative information is evaluated in the<br />
~~~eraii screening of an individual referred for an alcohol or<br />
