<strong>Texas</strong>, at Austin. In 1931 the Board of Regents provided a presidency and<br />
vested direct administrative authority in that office. From 1931 to 1950<br />
. the <strong>College</strong> operated directly under the Board of Regents. During the<br />
period September, 1950. to September, 1954, The University of <strong>Texas</strong><br />
operated under a chancellorship system. In September. 1954, the office of<br />
. Chancellor was abolished and the title of President was given to the chief<br />
administrative officer of the university system. <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
retains a semiautonomous position with its president reporting directly<br />
to the president of the system.<br />
The name of the school was changed to <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>College</strong> on June<br />
I. 1949. This was done in order to recognize the expansion of the curri-<br />
culum into various fields, thus enabling the <strong>College</strong> to present itself as<br />
an institution with a broad program, attractive to a variety of students<br />
from many different places.<br />
Today <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>College</strong>, a coeducational institution with an en-<br />
rollment of over 4,000 students, offers the following degrees: Engineer<br />
of Mines, Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering, Metallurgical En-<br />
- gineering. Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Arts,<br />
Bachelor of Science in the Sciences, in Education, and in Nursing; Bachelor<br />
of Business Administration, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts and Master<br />
- of Science in Education. The <strong>College</strong> is primarily an undergraduate insti-<br />
tution with emphasis on instruction. Proper attention. however, i< given to<br />
the Masters Degree; and the curriculum is expanding on that level in ac-<br />
cordance with faculty, facilities, and students available for graduate work.
