BIOLOGY AND GENETICS
• Theory of evolution (6 h)
• Ecology (6 h)
Lectures in “Biology” for medical students and for students of stomatology is
tought by docent R.Masso, Ph.D.
Practicums. Practicums have an important role in teaching biology and medical
parasitology - it is where skills are acquired for work with microscopes, to
conduct an experimental study and to understand morphology and life cycles
of human parasites. A practical class lasts for 2 or 3 academic hours, usually
without a break between the academic hours. Practicums are held in special
study rooms, using the necessary equipment.
Using visual aids (data projectors for presentation of texts and illustrations,
overheads, videos) during the practicums is widely practiced.
Students have 5 hours of practicums every week.
The course of practicums are related to course of lectures and gives students
the basic knowledge and skills in cell biology, genetics, biology of development
and medical parasitology (as a part of human ecology).
Topics of practicums in “Biology” are following:
• Cell biology (15 h)
• Biology of development (15 h)
• Medical parasitology (31 h)
• Genetics (20 h)
• Comparative morphology (as a part of evolutionary biology, 9 h)
To evaluate the knowledge acquired by the students during practicums, they
take written tests after passing subsequent part (5 tests). Successful passing
these tests deliver student from answer of these questions during oral examination
later.
Practicums for students of medicine and stomatology are supervisored by
assistants A. Adojaan, MD, Ph.D., A. Saag, M.Sc., and M. Masso, M.Sc.
Exams. To evaluate the knowledge acquired by the students, they take an
oral examination.
The examination in subject “Medical biology I” is realized by lectures of our
chair. Final mark is formed as a sum of marks for theoretical part passed during
lectures in “Biology”, results in practicums in “Biology” and results in subject
“General histology and embryology”.
Medical Genetics
Teaching of medical genetics took place during 1996-1998 years at the same
time both for 3 rd and 6 th year students, and in the year 1998/1999 only for 3 rd
year students. Since automn of 1999 up to the spring of 2001 there was no
teaching of medical genetics due to general changes in medical curriculum,
and it was decided to bring the teaching of medical genetics in to the 5 th year
of studium (see part VI.p.11).
