CONTENT OF THE TEACHING 1. Describe shortly the main study and student evaluation methods applied at the department. Primary aims of the course are to lead the students to understand microscopic structure of cells, tissues, and organs and to correlate structure to function. Main objectives are: • to familiarise students with methods applied in histology; • to give experience of microscopy; • to explain the interpretation of tissue sections of histological slides; • to learn the cell structure; • to give the overview of basic structure of four main tissues: epithelial tissue, connective/supportive tissue, muscular tissue, and nervous tissue; • to learn the stages of human embryonal development; • to learn the microscopic anatomy of all organ systems. Histology is taught by means of lectures and practical classes. In the first semester 1-hour lecture and 2 hours of practicals per week are held, in the second semester 2 hours of lectures and 3 hours of practicals per week take place. During the practicals students have to master 107 histological slides. Histology is taught in amount of 5 credit points (CP), 2 CP as General Histology and Human Embryology in the subject block Medical Biology I and 3 CP as Histology in the subject block Anatomy and Histology. One credit point equals to 40 hours, thus the overall hours of the obligatory part of histology is 200, as the number of classroom hours yielding one CP is 24 it makes 120 hours of active classroom work in histology. Assessment methods are written tests throughout both semesters, preliminary examination after the first semester and the final examination at the end of the second semester. Additionally, Chair of Histology offers elective courses: Immunohistology, 0,5 CP; Histological techniques, 0,5 CP; Early stages of human development, 1 CP; Morphology of oral cavity and teeth, 0,5 CP. 2. How have the aims and objectives described in the curriculum changed during the past five years? 6 During the past five years new curriculum has been implemented resulting in significant changes in teaching of histology. Compulsory part of histology has
ANATOMY been reduced from 6 CP to 5 CP. In the previous curriculum histology was taught as a separate subject during the second and third semester, in the new curriculum the teaching period has been shifted to the first and second semester and the subject is integrated into two subject blocks: general histology in Medical Biology I and special histology in Anatomy and Histology. Major changes undertaken in the new curriculum: • the traditional elementary course of general embryology has been given up; • teaching of human embryology is re-arranged in the form of elective subject (Early stages of human embryonal development); • cytology part is reorganized in co-ordinated manner with the subject Biology. Modern cell biology is a part of the subject Biology, while in histology necessary cytological details are studied together with tissues and organs; • number of lectures has been decreased 25%; • format of the examination has been changed from the oral to written form and it forms a part of the final examination in the subject block Anatomy and Histology. • special histology (microscopic anatomy) is taught in more co-ordinated manner with anatomy; • number of new elective subjects has been introduced. 3. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching in your department. Strengths Strengths of histology teaching involve: • modern teaching facilities combined with large demonstration collection of histological slides collected throughout the decades; • the relatively large number of hours for students' practical works; • availability of histology textbooks in Estonian. Weaknesses Weaknesses in histology teaching concern: • histology teaching should be more related to elementary pathology, i.e. where appropriate normal histology must give more introductory examples of histopathology; • although teaching of special histology (microscopic anatomy) is coordinated with anatomy it should be organized in a more comprehensive manner; • limited number of teaching staff. 4.
