SECTION I: SELF-EVALUATION 2 • The teaching of systematic and topographic anatomy has been rearranged, transferred from semester 3 to semester 2. The number of lectures decreases 30 %. • New optional subjects in the field of preparation, embryological-developmental anatomy and malformations in amount of 3CP are offered. • Integration in anatomy and histology teaching is increased and the subjects end with the final joint examination in the subject block Anatomy and Histology 3. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching in your department. Strengths • New Biomedical building with the modern equipment for teaching and scientific work. • Modern teaching process with all the multimedia possibilities as well as illustrated issues of anatomy in Estonian, high level of methodical work for Estonian and foreign students • The strength of teaching staff, whose members are highly valued because of their great length of service and experience in the field of anatomy: 3 from 7 teachers have achieved a medical degree in anatomy, 2 of assistants are acquiring the degree of doctor- and have passed the examinations of doctorate. • The positive feedback from the students and participation in the practical works and lectures, great interest in anatomy and especially in the dissection course. Students evaluate highly the dissection course as the basic and main method of learning anatomy, mastering the practical skills. Department of anatomy, having 300-year-old traditions in this field and being the inheritor of the famous Rauber´s school of anatomy never gave up the dissection course. • The Rauber Museum of Human Body Exposition, established in 1895, has met generally wide appreciation and fame as well as offeres great help in studying of anatomy. • Research is carried out on the levels of macroanatomy as well as microanatomy and cellular level with integration of the clinical problems which supplements the teaching and motivates the students to choose the right priorities for future. • The teaching of anatomy is co-ordinated with the Centre of Anthropology. • New optional courses in the field of anatomy which offer the possibility for additional preparation - joints, face, brain and development anatomy are introduced and turned out to be very popular. • For each lecture students receive materials in Estonian and English languages, with the illustrations and official terminology (N.A.). These issues serve the students and clinicians throughout their working years. • Severe individual control has to be carried out after every organ-system study - by means of preliminary examination.
ANATOMY Weaknesses • Limited time in the curriculum in relation to the extent of the material. • Some difficulties to integrate all the morphological disciplines histology, systematical anatomy and topographical anatomy in chronological order in a too short time (first year). 4. Describe the innovations in your teaching. • Innovation of teaching process has become possible mainly with using all possibilities of multimedia. • The multimedia projectors for lectures and practical works. • Using the CD-ROM based interactive learning. • With the modern equipment in the new biomedicum building new health protecting equipment in the dissection process has been applied - preparation tables with ventilation, modern and more toxic solutions for cadavers embalm etc. • Collection of confidential data for donation has been created. 5. Name the factors which most disturb teaching (excluding financial resources). Limited time in relation to the great extent of material to be studied. A freshman must learn the whole anatomical and histological terminology, thousand of new Latin words which will serve him through his entire medical study and future career. Freshmen need more emphasises on self-regulation of learning, the independent learning has to be organised more constructively, they are not able to use textbooks in foreign languages. The textbooks of anatomy are not available for everyone in university library due to small editions. II. EVALUATION OF TEACHING 6. How is the quality of teaching in your department evaluated? How are the content and the modes of the teaching changed on the basis of the evaluation? The good atmosphere between the teachers and students has always been there which allows good and direct feedback during and after the lectures and practical works. Anonymous questionnaire organised by the University, medical faculty and students’ level, evaluating the teaching and teachers. The change of the content and the modes of the teaching on the basis of the evaluation. The evaluation has helped us immediately to react to the needs and improve the work. Arrange our teaching program on the level of our possibilities. During 3
