BIOLOGY AND GENETICS
During the last 5 years we started to teach foreign students (mostly from
Finland) in English. They study all subjects in English during first 2 years.
6. From the academic year 1999/2000 we use for teaching rooms in the new
building of Biomedicum with good equipment. The halls for lectures and
rooms for practicums have all technical equipment for teaching (data projectors,
PCs, overheads, videos). We have obtained a good set of needed
preparations (microscope slides and macro-preparations) for teaching
medical parasitology.
7. We have started with utilisation of computer-aided learning and teaching
methods. Students have possibilities to use computerised classrooms to
study existing teaching materials in Estonian (produced by lecturers of our
chair) and textbooks in English.
Medical Genetics
1. As was already said above due to general changes in medical curriculum
there was a 2- years break in teaching “Medical Genetics” to medical students.
It was also decided to bring teaching of “Medical Genetics “ to the
5 th year of studium. Quite recently the course was renamed as “ Human
molecular and clinical genetics” and the teaching amount raised from
2CP to 4 credit points. The studium will start in automn of 2001 with lecture
course (42 hours), and with practical works in spring (54 hours).
2. In spring 2001 we also start teaching (2 CP) of “Medical Genetics” to stomatology
students as one part of “Children stomatology”. The course will
consist of 16 hours of lectures, and 32 hours of practical works.
3. From the academic year 2000/2001 we’ll use for teaching rooms in the
new building of Biomedicum with good equipment. The halls for lectures
have all technical equipment for teaching (data projectors, PCs, overheads,
videos). For practical teaching we have already equipment for PCR, electrophoresis,
gene analysis, etc. So the students can do individual work in
human molecular genetics, as it was already introduced by us in 1999 in
our old teaching rooms. Now, naturally, the students will work with better
equipment in better rooms.

5. A booklet for “ Chromosome aberrations” is in preparation by docent Ruth
Mikelsaar.
3. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching in your department.
Strengths
Biology
1. As the strengths of the curriculum of “Biology”, the students considered its
interesting and wide-ranging subjects, and that completing the curriculum
provides a strong theoretical basis.
