SECTION I: SELF-EVALUATION ceptual framework for new diagnostic and antimicrobial treatment possibilites, and the understandig of rational immunoprotection. In the recent medical curriculum of Tartu University the teaching of microbiology has been changed from separate teaching of systematic microbiology (IV, V semester) and clinical microbiology (XI semester) to converge into medical microbiology (III and IV semester). Compared to the earlier curriculum, more emphasis has been paid for problem-based teaching and solving of clinical situations, caused by infectious agents. The students have been provided with Estonian language teaching material: two Estonian Textbooks of Medical Microbiology I and II (1998, 2000), and also a Handbook of clinical microbiology (1998) have been written by the staff . 3. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching in your department. Strengths 1. Medical microbiology has been accepted by students as an interesting subject, widely needed in everyday medical practice and also for health protection of young, adolescent, adult and senile people. 2. Well educated staff (all have MD and PhD degrees) is motivated for teaching and this motivation is appreciated by students. Our teachers are very popular among students for their skills and willingness for teaching. 3. The staff has got wide international education and also their professional skills and language knowledge are good. The international and Russian student's teaching is successfully ongoing. 4. The educational staff is well motivated to bring new methods into the teaching. The textbooks were written by the educational staff. 5. Numerous experts of laboratory diagnostics of United Laboratories of Tartu University with PhD degree and also the PhD students have been involved in teaching of medical students. Modern aspects of microbiological diagnostics are brought to the knowledge of students on one hand, and on the other hand, the same methods are introduced quicker by the microbiologists into their everyday work. Weaknesses 1. For virology, mycology and parasitology teaching there is no Estonian textbook available yet. The writing is going on, yet in Estonia. In the field of medical mycology and parasitology no well-trained specialists with an academic degree are available 2. Though the microscopic slides of main infectious agents are used in Department, no collections of typical cases, slides and videos are available for student's self-assessment. 94 3. The area of medically important microorganisms is very wide and continuously increasing, which makes hard and subjective the selection of dis-
MICROBIOLOGY cussed cases and topics. The co-ordination with infectious diseases chair is minimal. 4. Describe the innovations in your teaching. 1. During lectures and seminars the Data projector and Power Point lectures with some Photos of clinical cases are used. The students (international, Russian) are frequently provided with handouts of lectures as they do not have the textbook written by us. 2. The Estonian textbooks and handbook are provided with a lot of tables and figures, reflecting both global and local data of infectious epidemiology and microbial drug resistance. 3. For practical interactive labwork two separate leaflet books have been published (T. Karki, T. Brilene, M. Mikelsaar. Practical works in medical microbiology, I and II. Tartu, 1999). In these books the plan of the practical work, its items have been proposed for acquintance, the practical works described and for interactive work the diagnostic formulars and the conclusions must be drawn by the students themselves. 4. An innovative conference-seminar has been applied for teaching of mycology. The themes of clinically important fungal infections where divided to students who themselves searched the data and made presentations using the material from different textbooks, papers and Internet. After each presentation the other students (opponents) started the discussion and evaluated the presentation and knowledge. 5. The exam of medical microbiology has been divided for 2 parts: general microbiology and altogether the bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology. 6. Through the whole curriculum the new elective problem-oriented courses are offered for students. Hospital infections, Most important for Estonia infections: spread, pathogenesis, diagnostics and control, Gynaecological infections, Stomatological infections, Antimicrobial drugs in clinical practice, Role of probiotics in medicine, History of microbiology. 7. Scientific achievements in molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases and molecular dignostics of the world and colleagues of department are reported on the lectures 8. Special course Research in Medical Microbiology was introduced, including lectures, seminars and laboratory experiments on the selected by students themes. The very positive feedback was got from students. This course helps to select students able to proceed with PhD studies. 5. Name the factors which most disturb teaching (excluding financial resources). 1. The medical microbiology is closely related with pathology, however, pathology is taught only after the microbiology. That makes difficult to provide 95
