the aims and content of a modern curriculum of pharmacology for medical students.
The textbooks are currently in use in the department, and are the following:
• L. Allikmets, L. Nurmand. Pharmacology, Tartu, 1996, 670 pp,
• L. Allikmets, L. Nurmand. Compendium Pharmacologicum. Tartu, 2000, 145
pp,
• M.-H. Otter, L. Nurmand. P. Pokk. Basics of Drug Prescription. Tartu, 2000,
103 pp, and others.
During past few years we started the process of transition toward use of
electronic multimedia in a teaching process. Currently there are available the
following courses (in Estonian) on-line:
• Drug toxicology course (A.Zharkovsky, A. Kalda, A.Kaasik)
• Pharmacology course for the students of dentistry (A. Zharkovsky, T. Zharkovsky,
A. Kalda)
• Electronic textbook in pharmacology "Ravim" (Drug) (A.Zharkovsky,
P. Pokk, T. Kivastik, A. Lang).
Weaknesses
The weak point in our teaching process is our inability to provide all students
with lab work, and via this methodology to demonstrate students how problems
could solved scientifically.
3. Describe the innovations in your teaching.
The availability of modern textbooks of pharmacology (the latest previous edition
was from 1982) has allowed a reduction in the number of lectures and a
corresponding increase in the volume of problem-oriented seminars and discussions.
The students taking the basic pharmacology course are about to
finish their pre-clinical training, and are very eager to learn about diseases and
therapy. This high level of motivation is deliberately exploited in the teaching
by presenting basic pharmacological principles in a clinically oriented, problem-based
context.
Critical evaluation of drug therapies is being taught in a seminar or critical
reading of published clinical study reports (compulsory) and on an elective
course unit dealing specifically with the planning, conduct, interpretation and
review of therapeutic studies.
A new integrated seminar in clinical therapeutics is being offered in the 1 th
semester, organised jointly with the department of Internal Medicine. There
are several electives, taught by Department members:
• L. Allikmets: Pharmacotherapy of infectious diseases
• L. Allikmets, V. Matto: Pharmacotherapy of Mental Disorders
• T. Zharkovskaja: Antiinflammatory drugs
• Zharkovsky, A. Kaasik A. Kalda: Introduction to Neurotoxicology (Theoretical
course)
