4. Name the factors which most disturb your teaching (excluding financial resources).
Over the past 10 years (1990-2000) the curriculum has changed twice, 1990
and 1996. The first change was done because Estonia became independent
and sum disciplines in medical curriculum had to be changed. The second
change in curriculum was more detailed and devoted more to develop problem-based
teaching and to give to the students to select additional elective
courses.
Until 1999 we worked in building constructed 200 years ago, and there were
several difficulties in organising both teaching and research. In August 1999
we moved to brand new building were the lecture halls are equipped with all
facilities for demonstrating materials on lectures and seminars.
All three chairs in the department have educated personnel. During the past
10 years 12 people have commenced doctoral degree. Department has 3
professors, three docents and 4 senior assistants.
Computer-aided learning and teaching methods have so far been utilised
only to a quite limited extent. This has been partly caused by the short-term
nature of the teaching time, discouraging systematic curriculum development
work. There are good teaching materials in electronic form in Estonian (prof.
Zharkovsky) but adoption of computer-aided methods would require a special
room and considerable amount of preparatory work and self-produced written
study compendia from the teachers. The teachers are able to prepare the
material.
II EVALUATION OF THE TEACHING
5. How is the quality of the teaching in your department evaluated?
A systematic questionnaire-based student evaluation has been carried out at
the end of the basic pharmacology course in the 5 th semester every other
year. The questionnaire has encouraged the students to write additional comments
on the teaching in a blank space reversed for non-structured answers.
The results of this evaluation have been discussed in a staff meeting.
