In the recent medical curriculum of Tartu University the teaching of microbiology
has been changed from separate teaching of systematic microbiology (IV,
V semester) and clinical microbiology (XI semester) to converge into medical
microbiology (III and IV semester). Compared to the earlier curriculum, more
emphasis has been paid for problem-based teaching and solving of clinical
situations, caused by infectious agents.
The students have been provided with Estonian language teaching material:
two Estonian Textbooks of Medical Microbiology I and II (1998, 2000), and
also a Handbook of clinical microbiology (1998) have been written by the staff
.
3. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching in your department.
Strengths
1. Medical microbiology has been accepted by students as an interesting
subject, widely needed in everyday medical practice and also for health
protection of young, adolescent, adult and senile people.
2. Well educated staff (all have MD and PhD degrees) is motivated for
teaching and this motivation is appreciated by students. Our teachers are
very popular among students for their skills and willingness for teaching.
3. The staff has got wide international education and also their professional
skills and language knowledge are good. The international and Russian
student's teaching is successfully ongoing.
4. The educational staff is well motivated to bring new methods into the
teaching. The textbooks were written by the educational staff.
5. Numerous experts of laboratory diagnostics of United Laboratories of Tartu
University with PhD degree and also the PhD students have been involved
in teaching of medical students. Modern aspects of microbiological diagnostics
are brought to the knowledge of students on one hand, and on the
other hand, the same methods are introduced quicker by the microbiologists
into their everyday work.
Weaknesses
1. For virology, mycology and parasitology teaching there is no Estonian textbook
available yet. The writing is going on, yet in Estonia. In the field of
medical mycology and parasitology no well-trained specialists with an academic
degree are available
2. Though the microscopic slides of main infectious agents are used in Department,
no collections of typical cases, slides and videos are available for
student's self-assessment.
