BIOLOGY AND GENETICS
• Molecular methods in laboratory medicine and identification of disease
genes
• Paternity and person identification using molecular genetic methods.
To evaluate the knowledge acquired by the students during practicums, they
passed written tests after the end of subsequent part . Successful passing of
these tests set students free from answer of these questions during oral examination
later.
Practicums for students of medicine and stomatology are supervisored by
docent Ruth Mikelsaar and assistants Gunnar Tasa and Mart Uusküla.
Exams. To evaluate the knowledge acquired by the students they had an oral
examination, and an additional written tests for those students who did not
pass successfully all tests after practical works.
Genetics
The teaching of genetics for nursery students has been fully as a lecture
course of medical genetics: 2 hours of lectures per week.
The topics have been:
• The molecular basis of human genetics
• Human chromosomes
• Chromosome aberrations
• Formal genetics: mendelian diseases
• Mitochondrial diseases
• Multifactorial inheritance and disease
• Cancer genetics
• Pharmacogenetics
• Genetic consultation
• Gene therapy
Lectures in “ Genetics” for nursery students were tought by prof.Aavo-Valdur
Mikelsaar .
Evaluation. To evaluate the knowledge acquired by the students they had a
written test for 3 main topics of lectures.
2. How have the aims and objectives described in the curriculum changed
during the past five years?
Biology
1. From the academic year 1999/2000 the course of “Biology” is compressed
to one semester (before it lasts two semesters) and the total amount of
subject is decreased from 7 CP to 6 CP.
